How do Muslim citizens across the globe perceive the European Union? And what factors influence their EU attitudes? This book offers the first systematic theoretical and empirical analysis of Muslim citizens’ EU attitudes in and outside the European Union. Using the best empirical data available, the book demonstrates that Muslim citizens’ attitudes are not shaped by their denomination and religious beliefs, but by material and political considerations. It finds that Muslims are most favourable toward the EU due to their positive experiences in European contexts, whereas in contrast, Muslim citizens outside the EU are more skeptical toward the European Union due to sovereignty concerns and the lack of support from the EU and its member states. Such findings not only contribute to the research on social legitimacy of international organizations and international public opinion more generally, but also provide important suggestions for (European) policy makers regarding external and domestic policies. What is the nature of Muslim-Jewish relations in Europe today? Based on qualitative interview data, this book explores narratives about Jews among Muslims in Norway. Drawing on culturally embedded narratives as well as personal experiences, interviewees reflect on the relationship between Jews and Muslims. The interreligious exchange between Islam and Judaism is as old as Islam. Today, the Arab-Israeli conflict has become an important frame of reference in the public discourse on Muslim-Jewish relations. The narratives presented in this book delineate shifting community boundaries and identifications that transcend dichotomised notions of "Muslims versus Jews." The analysis shows how Jewish history in Europe and the history of modern antisemitism serve as interpretative keys in the narratives, used for explaining the situation of the Muslim minority today. Furthermore, the book demonstrates how interviewees' perceptions of society's attitudes toward Muslim and Jewish experiences also strongly influence their perceptions of Muslim-Jewish relations.

Examining an urgent topic for many nations around the world, this book aims to reverse the commonly held belief that recent Muslim immigrants to Europe have failed to integrate satisfactorily into European culture. The authors look at Muslim communities in Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom--countries with a range of differing strategies for coordinating ethnic and state identities. Using the European Parliament's benchmarking guidelines, surveys, and other data, they find several locations where Muslims are in fact more integrated than popularly assumed.
