John McDougall, the last weaver on the Isle of Lismore in the West Highlands of Scotland, was not wealthy but his life as superintendent of the small islands Sabbath school was far from simple. As his eight children passed away or left Lismore for other parts of Scotland and America to live more prosperous lives, McDougall began writing letters to his adult son, John, who emigrated to Minnesota. The letters, which reflect his sadness after the childrens departure, provide rare insight into the daily routine and thoughts of a landless cottar who was an engaged and valued member of the Lismore community. Edited by his great-great-granddaughter, Margaret Miller, the compilation includes images of McDougalls original handwritten letters from 1870 to 1888, related photographs and maps, a timeline of events, and family trees. The letters reveal a thoughtful man who cared deeply about his family and community, and include poignant reminders of the ways in which medicine, communications, and transportation have changed throughout the centuries. As McDougall shares his thoughts and wishes, his enduring human values are brought to the forefront as this devout, principled man managed to influence the development of communities in the United States through his descendants. My Dear Son shares a compelling collection of letters from a nineteenth century Scottish island weaver to his son, letting us hear his thoughts as he continues his life in Scotland while his son emigrates to America and begins anew.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Hello, I'm your servant Shalom, Min. Before entering the seminary, I meditated on the Demodel following the Holy Spirit\'s impression. The title [Dear Son:Timothy] is because the Lord encouraged me to teach me as a father responsible for my children. As God's father told me, Paul was absorbed in taking what he had told Timothy and keeping it in his heart. Especially, the meditation of Timothy captured the deep relationship with the Lord, and I would like to reveal to everyone for the first time that I and the Lord have a secret relationship. It is a more precious asset than gold in my life, and it is a product of precious faith, so I would like to share grace with all of you through this book. In particular, I think this book will be a little comfort to prospective theology students and pastors like me who want to be your servant. I am sure that it will be a challenge and encouragement for those who are currently contemplating theology, theology students, and traders. As a servant of the Lord, this path is very lonely and steeper, and sometimes it feels like walking alone. Every time I see the mentors and pastors I respect, I'm always jealous of how they\'re holding on to this path and walking with joy, but I'm always scared and intimidated because I'm not confident. But thanks to God\'s Father, who listened to your voice and stood before you to gain a lot of comfort, strength, and hold on to the essence through the book of Demodel. Lord, who is the same yesterday and today forever, we invite you all with the love and tolerance of the father who leads us to love, even if there is no beauty! Then I'll meet you in heaven!

BOOK EXCERPT:
"The Devil's Own Dear Son" is Cabell's final philsophical comedy, about a man who discovers that his father was a demon and goes to Hell for a disquieting family reunion. James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) wrote many of the Twentieth Century's finest fantasies, including the controversial Jurgen, which was famously banned by the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. It was only after the furor died down that readers and critics were fully able to appreciate that the author was no mere sensationalist, but a literary artist of very high calibre. Cabell was above all else, an elegant stylist, whose gently caustic, beautifully fantasic comedies struck a chord in the Jazz Age and still resonate today. He was an important influence on subsequent writers as diverse as Fritz Leiber and Neil Gaiman. "[He] is a delightful author . . . I like the sheer audacity and the scope [of his work]."" -- Neil Gaiman "One of the all-time greats of fantasy, whose cynical yet romantic view of the human comedy is simultaneously hilarious, beautiful, and melancholy. A writer you must read."" -- Darrell Schweitzer
