The story my father told me long ago goes like this. Sometime during his Army career, at a time and place unknown, probably 1943 or early 1944, he would routinely check a certain bulletin board for the names or numbers of those soldiers slated to go overseas. One day, he noticed his name had "flopped" from the "not going overseas" list to the "going overseas" list. My father also noticed he had been "switched" with another soldier who, the day before, was going overseas, and suddenly, he was not but my father was. This usually did not happen. So he decided to try and find out how he had been "switched." He wrote a letter to an off-base name as high in the Army hierarchy as he could find. He explained the mysterious switch and waited. He wanted to know how and why his name had been switched with some other guy. He was twenty-two and away from familiar surroundings for the first time and was panicked and in fear. He prayed. After some time, my dad was summoned to the office of his camp head honcho who told him: "I'm not sure who you are or who you know, but I am holding orders to personally transfer you to any place you want to go in the Continental United States for the duration of the war." My father said, "Florida." His military record was skeletal at best. I decided to find out where he was and when. That is the story of this book.

Marie Dicker Haas knew how to make friends and keep themÑand being connected to others was what she treasured most. In this memoir, her spirit shines through, as do her philosophies on life, which she developed over more than 90 years before her death in 2017. From her formative days growing up on Staten Island, New York, to her years at Cornell University, through the World War II years, and on to life as it unfolded, she writes with a thoughtful, creative style. She writes courageously of her loves, including the death of Sammy Greenwald during World War II, which she writes Òaffected me more profoundly than any other event I had experienced until that time.Ó He had been born next door, and heÕd always been in her life. Years later, Marie eloped with a concert violinist who melodiously transformed her life for the next twenty-five years, and two children gave her the opportunity to experience one of her greatest joys: motherhood. She also shares lessons from her greatest challenges.

Ridge Mason’s world was just a remote and secluded corner of Northwest Tennessee that lay barricaded between a mighty river and a beautiful lake. Yet it knew no boundaries. Only moments after taking his first breath, Ridge suffered the most devastating loss a child could ever experience – the death of his mother. Yet it presented no barriers to him. His father and uncle, by contributing equally to his rearing, made sure of that. As a young man, Ridge’s life on the enchanting body of water had become so rich and colourful that he thought he could never be torn from it. But when the beautiful and alluring Madelyn Fleming entered his world, it was suddenly turned upside down. The unusual and complicated situation this created, forced Ridge to abandon the only place on Earth where he ever wanted to live, in order to save the one he loved. Fearing he would never be able to return home again, Ridge was almost torn apart by his insatiable love for Madelyn and the lake that never stopped beckoning him. When it appeared that only a miracle could appease the two opposing forces, that’s exactly what happened.

This is an encapsulation of one person’s travel through time, not necessarily meaningful in its portrayal or its outcomes but in its own small way leaving an imprint in the sands of time. It is a personal record of one who has lived through and, in some small way, participated in a few of the events that have shaped our history. It also encapsulates events that embrace family, friends, and acquaintances. At the same time, it touches on those events and locations that have also had both major and minor impacts on the world stage, in an age in which we have witnessed incredible changes in technology across a wide area of human endeavours. Developments that have seen man leave his own environment for the first time to venture into the space that lies beyond—something that our predecessors could never have dreamed possible. Changes that have also brought economic and social improvements and yet have not resolved the issues of human conflict or our responsibilities as custodians of the planet.
