Some would label Rob Plaskas as disabled, while others may call him a victim. Truth be told, he is a survivor and a fighter. “My Fight for Recovery: A Story of Overcoming Life Threatening Brain Surgery” is his first-hand account of the tragedy and terror he experienced, who he was, and what he has become. Over time he learned to confront his circumstances and embrace his new reality. He found courage and strength to reinvent himself and charted his own path to succeed in his new life. This memoir is about his recovery from a brain hemorrhage during brain surgery. It caused the equivalent of a major stroke, leaving him unable to speak, write, read or comprehend, and left him with rightsided paralysis. It caused severe damage to his short-term memory and made him dependent on anti-seizure medicine. His recovery shows how some survivors of severe brain injuries can recover and have a productive life if they work hard at their physical, speech, cognitive, and emotional therapies.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Having been ill for over two years with what he thought was colitis, Anton FitzSimons was admitted to hospital in February 2003. He was diagnosed with advanced lymphoma. Despite a series of operations his condition steadily deteriorated. In isolation in a high dependency unit, and armed with a basic understanding of the placebo effect, he strove to believe that he would recover. By August, he was less than half his normal bodyweight, had lost two major organs, had suffered a massive stroke, and was the subject of a 'do not resuscitate' order. With treatment for the lymphoma failing completely the former soldier switched tactics. As opposed to striving to believe in recovery, he strove to accept recovery as a certainty.Reviews:"e;Brave and inspiring... as a reader I was willing him to defy the odds."e; Julia Combellack, Penny Brohn Cancer Care"e;A triumphant story of love, resilience and survival."e; Catherine Deveney, Scottish Journalist of the Year"e;Extraordinary and uplifting."e; Andrew Anderson, Maggie's Centres"e;An inspirational account of 'fighting spirit'."e; Professor David Peters, Chair British Holistic Medical Association"e;A work that should be made available to all students in studies related to health promotion, public health, psychology and in medical schools as well."e; Professor Theodore H MacDonald, Former Head of Postgraduate Studies in Health Brunel University

My Fight For A New Taiwan

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Lu Hsiu-lien’s journey is the story of Taiwan. Through her successive drives for gender equality, human rights, political reform, Taiwan independence, and, currently, environmental protection, Lu has played a key role in Taiwan’s evolution from dictatorship to democracy. The election in 2000 of Democratic Progressive Party leader Chen Shui-bian to the presidency, with Lu as his vice president, ended more than fifty years of rule by the Kuomintang (Nationalist Party). Taiwan’s painful struggle for democratization is dramatized here in the life of Lu, a feminist leader and pro-democracy advocate who was imprisoned for more than five years in the 1980s. Unlike such famous Asian women politicians as Burma’s Aung San Suu Kyi, India’s Indira Gandhi, and Pakistan’s Benazir Bhutto, Lu Hsiu-lien grew up in a family without political connections. Her impoverished parents twice attempted to give her away for adoption, and as an adult she survived cancer and imprisonment, later achieving success as an elected politician—the first self-made woman to serve with such prominence in Asia. My Fight for a New Taiwan’s rich narrative gives readers an insider's perspective on Taiwan’s unique blend of Chinese and indigenous culture and recent social transformation.

"A great tortured rockstar read. Highly recommend!" - Colleen Hoover I’m unpredictable. A genius and underachiever. I’m the song, the voice, the passion, the pain. I am failure, because the music chose me. I’m its victim, not its gift. She destroyed my career. Ruined my life. Pushed me from the shadows and exposed my lies. She’s an all-consuming fire, and now her flames are aimed at me. She loves to watch me burn, but the part we never saw coming? Maybe I needed a fire to claw my way out of the dark. (Please note this book addresses mental illness and addiction in a compassionate, realistic manner.)

Cancer 100 Ways To Fight

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Cancer: 100 Ways to Fight Your own attitude is your brightest guiding star. Some of success is doing what you like to do. But, more of it is doing the things you don’t like to do, but must. It is too easy to make an excuse, and not do it, and fail. –John Roberts As this book goes to press early in 2010, I am 75 and into my fifth year with incurable metastatic prostate cancer, which had already spread to the bones before cancer was diagnosed and the prostate removed. The statistical prognosis for the current treatments of choice is that one-half of these patients will die within three years, 75% within five. This usually happens after the standard treatments and chemotherapy fail and must be discontinued due to harmful side effects or weakening effectiveness, resumed cancer growth, and the failure of bones or key organs. I am still feeling fine, no pain, living a normal life, and I have completed eight months of chemotherapy with a 63% drop in my PSA (prostate cancer blood test) without major side affects or rising PSA. I have fought this cancer and its personal consequences in more than a hundred ways as described here. Above all, a lifetime of fitness, and my current excellent physical and mental condition, supplemented by great medical care and everything else I can learn or think of, is partially responsible for my success in living beyond the average life span for my particular fatal disease. We cannot know which weapon or how much each one contributes to the extension of life, so we must use them all. The doctors all say that cancer survival is very unpredictable, and I figured that many of the positive outcomes must depend on how comprehensively and how hard the individual fights. So, I immediately started this book and organized my fight. I was extremely unfortunate: most prostate cancer either is so slow growing, or eliminated by removal, that survivors live for many years. In my case, it had already spread, or metastasized, to the bones prior to the operation, and that cancer is inoperable and incurable. But, some people in that condition die very early, while others, like me, live much longer. This is highly unpredictable in individual cases due to variation in patient condition, treatment effectiveness, and other unknowns. More than half of all people newly diagnosed with cancer will be cured or given extended remission. They will die of something else. Of the other half, a large number have treatable cancer and they still have many years to live. The remainder, probably including me, have learned that they have incurable cancer that has grown too strong or spread and taken root in such places that it cannot be killed or removed and death is likely in the next few months or years. Nevertheless, normally incurable cancer and conventional predictability sometimes fail, and others may prolong life by fighting with strong mental and physical effort. As the disease progresses and is treated, and science advances, sometimes in great leaps, we are rarely sure of which group we are in. That uncertainty, that hope, and the dreadful power of cancer, call for great strength of character and effort in both patients and those around them. This book is about that. The animal instinct to survive is, in humans alone, expanded in our unique cortex to something much greater––the intelligent understanding of self-awareness and an intense desire to prolong the experience, growth, and emotion of life. The human spirit, beyond the mere motivation of existence, is largely responsible for all that our species has conquered and achieved. It is an essential quality to be trained, treasured, and put to use, and one of the finest ways is to survive, continue, and improve our exceptional life through our collective and individual intellect. In the last century, medical science, the visibility of living in distant years, and the recognition that we are, and can be, responsible for increasing our own longevity have ad
