BOOK EXCERPT:

My Life by Me and My Poetry In-Between By: Marty Slain (Mykos) My life’s had a lot of laughter and love But also tears of frustration and sorrow, A few regrets and way too many whys But I still look forward to my tomorrow In June 2015, at the age of 60, Marty Slain (Mykos) decided to start this book. Her life has been full of ups and downs, challenges faced and overcome, love lost and found, and friends and family encouraged her to share her story. In poetry and prose, Marty spins her unique tale and hopes to encourage others with her positive spirit. Part of a large family, Marty grew up surrounded by faith and love. At eighteen, she discovered she was pregnant and married the baby’s father. The young family tried to make it work. But when her husband became abusive, Marty left him. She was repeatedly unlucky in love, but found happiness in her three children and career in construction and restoration. She and her siblings supported each other through divorces and deaths. Marty had fun in the good times – plenty of dancing, rich friendships, and a wonderful man. When darkness came, however, she had to fight to keep the light in her life. Watching her children face their own struggles in relationships and parenting brought both joy and heartache. In the end, it’s been a wonderful journey of family and friends who have inspired and challenged her. Poems celebrate the love she has lived as well as soberly reflecting the dark times in her life. Sensitive and spirited, Marty’s words will comfort and encourage you. Laughter is important, family is everything, and faith will always bring you through.

The Poetry Of My Life

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this book I describe different events that I have occurred throughout my life by using poetry. My first love has always been writing songs and poetry. My songs and poems helped me express the way I am feeling without speaking a word. I wrote my first poem at nine years old in Cheraw, South Carolina after my grandmother passed away. I wrote a poem for her. I never imagine in a million years that I would have my poetry published. This shows that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and don’t let anyone discourage you. I am a mother of two boys. I am at the point of my life where I am trying to set good example for children. I hope this encourages them to reach their dreams. I am from West Palm Beach, Florida. I miss home a lot. I travel back and forward whenever I get time off from work. I hope that my poems can be inspirational to you. And I would like to thank God for not letting me give up and for the different talents he has blessed me with.

The Unthronged Oracle

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Laura Riding was a major poet whose poems, though widely admired and influential, have been little understood. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s she was 'a devout advocate of poetry' believing that 'to go to poetry is the most ambitious act of the mind'. Her subsequent renunciation of poetry in the 1940s gave rise to bemusement. Jack Blackmore tackles the causes of the neglect of Riding's poetry and establishes new and productive approaches to the poems. His close readings of fifteen poems demonstrate the progress of Collected Poems and the remarkable range and scope of her poetry. He establishes both the strength and unity of the poems and the continuity between them and her 'post-poetic' work, in particular her spiritual testament The Telling. Mark Jacobs's vivid memoir of a visit to the author in later life at her Florida home complements the work on the poems. "These essays are interesting and you have done well...You seem to me fair and just in what you say about her work.' - Robert Nye 'This is ambitious work, full of insights.' - Professor Michael Schmidtÿ

Modernity Sexuality And Ideology In Iran

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In Iran, since the mid–nineteenth century, one issue has been a common concern: how should Iran become modern? More than a century of struggle for or against modernity has constituted much of the social, political, and cultural history of the country. In the decades since the 1979 Revolution, the question has become even more critical. In Modernity, Sexuality, and Ideology in Iran, Talattof finds that the process of modernity never truly unfolded, due in large part to Iran’s reluctance to embrace the seminal subjects of gender and sexuality. Talattof’s approach reflects a unique look at modernity as advancement not only in industry and economy but also toward an open, intellectual discourse on sexuality. Exploring the life and times of Shahrzad, a dancer, actress, filmmaker, and poet, Talattof illuminates the country’s struggle with modernity and the ideological, traditional, and religious resistance against it. Born in 1946, she performed in several theater productions, became an acclaimed film star in the 1970s, and pursued a career as a journalist and poet. Following the revolution, she was imprisoned and eventually became homeless on the streets of Tehran. Her success and eventual decline as a female artist and entertainer illustrate the conflict between modernity and tradition and Iran’s failure to embrace an overt expression of sexuality. Talattof also profiles several other female artists of the 1970s, analyzing their lives and work as windows through which to examine what Iranian culture allowed and what it repudiated. A pioneering and timely work, Modernity, Sexuality, and Ideology in Iran explores the integral role of popular culture and female artists in the shaping of modern Iran, constructing a new framework for understanding such crucial concepts as ideology and modernity.
