BOOK EXCERPT:

My Rubber Knife Life By: William Watson Purkey The theme of My Rubber Knife Life is to share the author’s adventures of a lifetime. His granddaughter, Emily, urged him to write his memoirs. She assured him that, during his ninety years, he had a led a very unusual life. As a child, Purkey created an imaginary world with a rubber knife and a scary Humpty Dumpty. When he was eleven years old, his mother fibbed about his age and he became a United States Senate Page Boy. He was present on the floor of the House of Representatives when President Roosevelt declared war on the Empire of Japan. He had the pleasure of meeting Winston Churchill. In high school, he was voted most entertaining, although he had absolutely no talents. From high school, Purkey entered the United States Air Force and was trained as an Ordnance Disposal Specialist (Bomb disposal). He survived the Korean War with three battle stars. Following his military career, Purkey attended the University of Virginia where he received his doctorate. After decades of work, he became a full professor at two major universities: the University of Florida and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. While there, he wrote books that received international attention. Thanks to his books, he received many invitations to speak. He spoke to groups in 48 states; in North, Central and South America; and four of the five continents. He believes his life-long commitment to the key concepts of imagination and flexibility will be of significant value to the reader of this book.

Boy S Life

BOOK EXCERPT:

An Alabama boy’s innocence is shaken by murder and madness in the 1960s South in this novel by the New York Times–bestselling author of Swan Song. It’s 1964 in idyllic Zephyr, Alabama. People either work for the paper mill up the Tecumseh River, or for the local dairy. It’s a simple life, but it stirs the impressionable imagination of twelve-year-old aspiring writer Cory Mackenson. He’s certain he’s sensed spirits whispering in the churchyard. He’s heard of the weird bootleggers who lurk in the dark outside of town. He’s seen a flood leave Main Street crawling with snakes. Cory thrills to all of it as only a young boy can. Then one morning, while accompanying his father on his milk route, he sees a car careen off the road and slowly sink into fathomless Saxon’s Lake. His father dives into the icy water to rescue the driver, and finds a beaten corpse, naked and handcuffed to the steering wheel—a copper wire tightened around the stranger’s neck. In time, the townsfolk seem to forget all about the unsolved murder. But Cory and his father can’t. Their search for the truth is a journey into a world where innocence and evil collide. What lies before them is the stuff of fear and awe, magic and madness, fantasy and reality. As Cory wades into the deep end of Zephyr and all its mysteries, he’ll discover that while the pleasures of childish things fade away, growing up can be a strange and beautiful ride. “Strongly echoing the childhood-elegies of King and Bradbury, and every bit their equal,” Boy’s Life, a winner of both the Bram Stoker and World Fantasy Awards, represents a brilliant blend of mystery and rich atmosphere, the finest work of one of today’s most accomplished writers (Kirkus Reviews).

Living When Everything Changed

BOOK EXCERPT:

Entering the academy at the dawn of the women’s rights movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the first generation of feminist academics had a difficult journey. With few female role models, they had to forge their own path and prove that feminist scholarship was a legitimate enterprise. Later, when many of these scholars moved into administrative positions, hoping to reform the university system from within, they encountered entrenched hierarchies, bureaucracies, and old boys’ networks that made it difficult to put their feminist principles into practice. In this compelling memoir, Mary Kay Thompson Tetreault describes how a Catholic girl from small-town Nebraska discovered her callings as a feminist, as an academic, and as a university administrator. She recounts her experiences at three very different schools: the small progressive Lewis & Clark College, the massive regional university of Cal State Fullerton, and the rapidly expanding Portland State University. Reflecting on both her accomplishments and challenges, she considers just how much second-wave feminism has transformed academia and how much reform is still needed. With remarkable candor and compassion, Thompson Tetreault provides an intimate personal look at an era when both women’s lives and university culture changed for good. The Acknowledgments were inadvertently left out of the first printing of this book. We apologize for the oversight, and offer them here instead. Future printings will include this information. Before Fidel

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Before Fidel Castro seized power, Cuba was an ebullient and chaotic society in a permanent state of turmoil, combining a raucous tropical nature with the evils of arbitrary and corrupt government. Yet this fascinating period in Cuban history has been largely forgotten or misrepresented, even though it set the stage for Castro's dramatic takeover in 1959. To reclaim the Cuba that he knew—and add color and detail to the historical record—distinguished political scientist Francisco José Moreno here offers his recollections of the Cuba in which he came of age personally and politically. Moreno takes us into the little-known world of privileged, upper-middle-class, white Cubans of the 1930s through the 1950s. His vivid depictions of life in the family and on the streets capture the distinctive rhythms of Cuban society and the dynamics between parents and children, men and women, and people of different races and classes. The heart of the book describes Moreno's political awakening, which culminated during his student years at the University of Havana. Moreno gives a detailed, insider's account of the anti-Batista movement, including the Ortodoxos and the Triple A. He recaptures the idealism and naiveté of the movement, as well as its ultimate ineffectiveness as it fell before the juggernaut of the Castro Revolution. His own disillusionment and wrenching decision to leave Cuba rather than accept a commission in Castro's army poignantly closes the book.

I Want My Mtv

Remember When All You Wanted Was Your MTV? The perfect gift for the music fan or child of the eighties in your life. Named One of the Best Books of 2011 by NPR – Spin - USA Today – CNBC - Pitchfork - The Onion - The Atlantic - The Huffington Post – VEVO - The Boston Globe - The San Francisco Chronicle Remember the first time you saw Michael Jackson dance with zombies in "Thriller"? Diamond Dave karate kick with Van Halen in "Jump"? Tawny Kitaen turning cartwheels on a Jaguar to Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again"? The Beastie Boys spray beer in "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)"? Axl Rose step off the bus in "Welcome to the Jungle"? It was a pretty radical idea-a channel for teenagers, showing nothing but music videos. It was such a radical idea that almost no one thought it would actually succeed, much less become a force in the worlds of music, television, film, fashion, sports, and even politics. But it did work. MTV became more than anyone had ever imagined. I Want My MTV tells the story of the first decade of MTV, the golden era when MTV's programming was all videos, all the time, and kids watched religiously to see their favorite bands, learn about new music, and have something to talk about at parties. From its start in 1981 with a small cache of videos by mostly unknown British new wave acts to the launch of the reality-television craze with The Real World in 1992, MTV grew into a tastemaker, a career maker, and a mammoth business. Featuring interviews with nearly four hundred artists, directors, VJs, and television and music executives, I Want My MTV is a testament to the channel that changed popular culture forever.

Good Ole Rotten Apples

BOOK EXCERPT:

Judy Frankamp discovered that being raised in a “religious” home was not enough. It was only when Jesus her Saviour became the Lord of her life, she truly understood what it meant to be born again. Then she could not help but be honest and confront those around her. She takes us into specific issues that have bothered many Christians, but they could not quite get a handle on them. Frankamp knows how to put them into words. With an engaging, homey style, the author explains how she learned that her favorite “Christian” talk show host was really pushing the New Age. She puts into plain language what is wrong with Harry Potter. She describes her confrontation with liberal pastors who didn’t care if their Bible had removed or changed the words of God. They just didn’t want to make waves. On several occasions, she writes from the point of view of Satan and his devils, scheming how to derail Christians. There are some things, like the Harry Potter craze, that we just “know” aren’t right, but can’t explain it. After reading Frankamp’s story, you’ll know how.
