Tryst With Destiny Re Lived

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Farmer’s protest witnessed in the Indian subcontinent shook the foundations of a tyrannical regime reminiscent of ruthless Rulers of yore, possessing searing qualities, spreading violence, attempting to instil dread in every soul, thereby rendering the victims numb with fear and an inability to retort in any manner. Unfettered by the autocratic approach, the grit, determination and unity amongst the righteous farmers threw back the shackles of injustice, brazenly brushed off any fear and reinstated their fight for their Rights. The only difference visible is that Knowledge of law and self-respect have replaced arms and weaponry in this battle, although it was not entirely discarded. The undaunted display of strength and unity by farmers, whose existence was earlier marked by docility, rekindled the Revolutionist within us. A typical day in India is marked by protests and dharnas with social activists voicing their rights, which gradually drowns in the cacophony of political debates, slogans and cannon attacks by the police, who have reduced themselves from being the ‘protectors’ of law to being the ‘puppets’ of the reigning Government. The Farmers protest of 2020 transformed this usual perception, grabbed the attention of every citizen who wilfully would shrug off any controversies by keeping a safe distance from protestors and garnered global attention from celebrities & social activists about the atrocities meted out to them. Every attempt was made to curb the movement including blatant violation of democratic and constitutional rights, betrayal of trusts, unwarranted arrests, which remains unreported till date. This book traces firsthand information of my experiences living with the farmers & their families in the protest camps at the city borders, birth of a conscious citizen, an Observer, a Transformist within me and the tryst with destiny to venture out of the ‘comfort’ zone and enter the ‘courage’ zone to be a part of a historical moment in India and foster the feeling of brotherhood amongst the farmers.

Rejoice In Adversity Triumph In War

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A collection of anecdotes from Major General Rajpal Punia's close to four decades in the Indian army, Rejoice in Adversity, Triumph in War is a rare, electrifying memoir. It is a testament to how the army is not a livelihood but a way of life, one that can transport you from a social soiree to a dangerous jungle in the space of a night, and where postings are often to places that the GPS cannot navigate to. Punia's dream of a career in the army began when he was ten years old and donned a Sainik School uniform for the first time. His career has taken him from patrolling the hotly contested Line of Actual Control to United Nations Peacekeeping Missions in warzones across the world. Among his many achievements was the peaceful evacuation of the Dera Sacha Sauda complex at Sirsa, now considered a textbook case for deploying armed forces in disturbed civilian areas. This is an exciting, first-hand account of one of the most thrilling jobs in the world, and a must-read for anyone who has ever wondered about the men and women who serve in India's armed forces.

My Birth Was Not Destiny

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

For people who were poor, black, and from the working-class, growing up in a British Caribbean colony during the 1900s, was a very difficult experience. However, from about the 1930s, enlightenment, ideological challenges, and change were finding sound footing in the area, more than ever before. During that time, British control and exploitation of the islands were being disrupted and challenged aggressively, by labor unionists, and Pan Africanists. Further, by the mid-1900s, the British interest in, and their ability to manage the islands successfully, were failing. At that time, there was the disruptive political thrust from local labor unionists for changes in the islands' story. That emerging new leadership saw and promoted education as a necessary path to the future, for working-class people in the islands. After the author learned to read, having been encouraged by an older sister, he read widely from the books available, and his life began to experience transformation. The author noted that his love for reading, plus a growing exposure to education, initiated the change and inspiration beyond the limiting society and thinking, into which he was born. In time, Whitman's academic push helped him to become an educator, mountain climber, long distance swimmer, photographer, and more. In all the changes which have come to the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis, he sees the local leaders' push against the evils of British colonialism. In time, there was enlightenment and growth from education, also through the love and inspiration of God. Those were major forces which contributed to the reformation now seen in lives, and around the islands. In this book, My Birth Was Not Destiny, the author looks back at his life in Nevis, and beyond. He attributes his successes to focused struggles, the illuminating power of education, and God's continuing intent to intervene in human lives, always for good. Dr. Browne also expresses a truth that his children, students, the community, and the wider world, as a result of education and careful academic concentration, can in time, learn, grow, have their own sense of a transformative experience, as their lives become inspired and refashioned. Over time, they too will reach toward the future, intending to leave special markings on the sands of their time.
