BOOK EXCERPT:
Part scrapbook, part memoir, this wonderfully colourful and eloquent diary brims with vivid observations, providing a rare snapshot of what life was like on the Home Front during the First World War. Amateur artist, animal lover and keen writer of letters to the papers, Mrs Bilbrough witnessed the men leaving for war (her husband, Kenneth, a banker in the City, was fortunately too old to be called up); the horses at Waterloo waiting to be transported to France; bombings and airraids; the introduction of the Daylight Saving Bill and food price increases (her consternation as the price of a tin of tongue rose from 2/- to 4/6 is clear!). She also writes at her outrage at the shooting of British nurse Edith Cavell; her sadness when Lord Kitchener is drowned at sea; her alarm as Zeppelins flew over Kent and her anger at the wide-ranging German atrocities. Her relief as war ended is palpable ('PEACE! The armistice is signed, "the day" has come at last! And it is ours!'). Interspersed with her daily jottings are cuttings and cartoons, her own watercolours and drawings and the colourful flags that were sold to raise money for the troops. Charming yet moving, this diary gives us a taste of what it was really like to live through the Great War, seen from the perspective of an acute social observer.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book is Dedicated to all of Kosovo`s children, who, in way or another, survived the war, torture, and, what is most difficult, death in the eyes of God. I`m not more than you are. I`m here from you and for you. Our roots have the same blood, pain, and language! The time has come for your voice, along with mine, to be heard, and there is no one to deny this We children of Kosovo We children of the war. In that very close moment, I stopped in the street, crying with my head towards the sky, praying. Something inside me spoke: Look, feel and remember everything, because one day, when you grow up, you have to be able to tell this story to the World.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Alexander G. Downing enlisted in the Eleventh Iowa Infantry on August 15, 1861 and kept a diary of his life in the Army until he was discharged on July 31, 1865. The Eleventh Iowa Infantry was assigned to the Army of the Tennessee and became part of Crocker's Iowa Brigade. This unit participated in several major battles, including Shiloh, Vicksburg and Corinth. They were eventually assigned to General William Tecumseh Sherman and took part in his famous "March to the Sea" where they fought in the Battle for Atlanta. As you read of this soldier's life during one of the most trying times in our country's history, you will gain an understanding of what it was like to be a soldier in that great war. Mr. Downing made entries for each and every day he served so you will find there were times of boredom as well as moments of terror and tragedy. You will find both humorous and sad entries as well as the inner feelings of this truly remarkable American patriot who experienced so much in the four years he served his country. BOOK EXCERPT:
Wars are started by a person or persons and are usually a quest for power for a person or a group of people and they don't really care how many people are killed nor how many families are losing a father, mother or brothers or whole families and their relatives. Sometimes, it is necessary to start a war by a peaceful nation against countries tat are harming and have the publically displayed their intentions to extend their borders by taking land from established country's land and people. This I would consider declaring a war to be the only necessary solution to the problem----but still a war with people getting maimed and killed. In World War One---Germany was the problem----once again lust for power. I wasn't even thought of at that period of time----in fact, I hadn't even arrived on the scene at that point of time. But, think about it for a moment-----there's not one inch of land that has increased in size in those thousands of years of civilization and wars. I was a training in Camp Blanding in Florida---we could look in any direction and there was a sign posted in large letters------"Kill or Be Killed"----"Kill or Be Killed". We were just 18 or 19 year old kids--------think about it--------"Kill or Be Killed"-what an education-but necessary to imprint it inside our young brains. It gave us young kids a reason to become killers-----hesitate for a second and you're dead. Back then in training, we used to repeat over and over was that wars were necessary to "Decrease The Surplus Population"--------It is most certainly a true statement.
