Although not an Indian law casebook, this work does contain outlines of many major Indian law cases, congressional acts, and treaties. Now in its third edition, Alaska Natives and American Laws is still the only work of its kind, canvassing federal law and its history as applied to the indigenous peoples of Alaska. Covering 1867 through 2011, the authors offer lucid explanations of the often-tangled history of policy and law as applied to Alaska’s first peoples. Divided conceptually into four broad themes of indigenous rights to land, subsistence, services, and sovereignty, the book offers a thorough and balanced analysis of the evolution of these rights in the forty-ninth state. This third edition brings the volume fully up to date, with consideration of the broader evolution of indigenous rights in international law and recent developments on the ground in Alaska.

The essays included in this collection help define Native American sovereignty in today's world. They draw upon past legal experiences and project into the future. The collection begins with a brief definition of sovereignty, followed by a consideration of the most important documents that show the relationships between Native American nations and the U.S. government. They continue with a study of how treaties were handled by Congress and the current and future implication of the treaty relationships. The selection concludes with a look at the issue of federal plenary power in terms of treaties and the evolution of American case law.

American Indian Sovereignty and Law: An Annotated Bibliography covers a wide variety of topics and includes sources dealing with federal Indian policy, federal and tribal courts, criminal justice, tribal governance, religious freedoms, economic development, and numerous sub-topics related to tribal and individual rights. While primarily focused on the years 1900 to the present, many sources are included that focus on the 19th century or earlier. The annotations included in this reference will help researchers know enough about the arguments and contents of each source to determine its usefulness. Whenever a clear central argument is made in an article or book, it is stated in the entry, unless that argument is made implicit by the title of that entry. Each annotation also provides factual information about the primary topic under discussion. In some cases, annotations list topics that compose a significant portion of an author's discussion but are not obvious from the title of the entry. American Indian Sovereignty and Law will be extremely useful in both studying Native American topics and researching current legal and political actions affecting tribal sovereignty.

After many years of forced assimilation policies, numerous broken treaties, and failed government policies, Native Americans are still fighting for respect and equal rights in the United States. American Indian reservations in the United States resemble third world countries, with high poverty rates, increasing unemployment, environmental disasters and major health problems such as diabetes and alcoholism. In addition, racism is still prevalent for Native Americans today. Reservation lands are often isolated, and present little or no opportunities, and they have poor infrastructure, inadequate housing, and the schools have lower than average educational standards. Therefore, Native Americans often must leave the reservation in search of education and better vocational opportunities if they are to succeed in mainstream society. However, in doing so, they may lose touch with their culture, their language, and their traditional way of life. The poor conditions on the reservations may actually stand in stark contrast for those who live off the reservations, or live in larger metropolitan areas. Native Americans living off the reservation may have a better than average chance at education and job opportunities. However, almost all Native Americans still find that they are victims of ridicule as schools and professional sports teams continue to utilise Native American images, logos, and racist team mascots as their symbols. This book investigates the social problems and the status of Native Americans in the United States in the twenty-first century. It identifies and describes the social problems faced by Native Americans today, and brings up a valuable argument: have the Native Americans really assimilated?

The historical involvement of Native peoples within the criminal justice system is a narrative of tragedy and injustice, yet Native American experience in this system has not been well studied. Despite disproportionate representation of Native Americans in the criminal justice system, far more time has been spent studying other minority groups. Nat

This book serves as a much-needed source of information on the social and health issues that impact the health of Native American women in the United States, accompanied by invaluable historical, cultural, and other contextual data about this sociocultural group. Health and Social Issues of Native American Women is the first book that specifically explores and discusses health and related social issues within the world of Native American women, providing strong historical and cultural perspectives as well as other contextual information that is often missing or misrepresented in other works about Native American women. Comprising contributions from mostly Native American women scholars, the work presents key background information on native women's health, health care delivery systems, and sociocultural history, and its chapters address the changing role of native women in Alaska and other parts of Indian country. Each author taps her specific area of expertise and knowledge to spotlight specific native women's health problems, such as nutrition, aging, domestic violence, diabetes, and substance abuse.
