BOOK EXCERPT:
National parks have always been an emotive and iconic symbol, ever since the first parks of the modern era were created in the mid-nineteenth century. This book, based on original research, delves deeply into their character and significance, and the larger context in which they developed. The book celebrates the deserved attractiveness of the parks as wilderness or 'spectacle' to millions of visitors, but also emphasises how there was nothing inevitable, self-sustaining or without cost in their magnificence and accessibility. Those early parks were a powerful unifying force as national 'playgrounds', especially as motor transport democratised their use. However they also provoked bitter conflict in their dispossession of local communities and perhaps deliberate segregation of people from scenery and wildlife. That first century of national parks, which concluded with the significant break of the Second World War and the subsequent development of more international approaches to conservation, left an uncertain legacy. It was a fragile foundation from which to build what became an integral part of today's conservation movement.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The nineteenth-century novelist, George Sand, is most famous today for her tumultuous love life and trouser-wearing days in Paris, but she achieved major commercial and critical success in her day and has gradually made her way back into the literary canon. Mainly known for her pastoral tales and allegedly simplistic idealism, Sand in fact produced around ninety novels which experiment with a wide range of themes, forms and aesthetic models. This book offers thefirst study of vision in Sand's works. It argues that, rather than rejecting reality in favour of the ideal, Sand integrates physical observation with internal forms of seeing such as the imaginationand visionary insights. The study maintains that Sand's understanding of vision provides the basis for her distinctive style and challenges conventional categorisations of the novel in this period.

BOOK EXCERPT:
How should we share the truth about the environmental crisis? At a moment when even the most basic facts about ecology and the climate face contestation and contempt, environmental advocates are at an impasse. Many have turned to social media and digital technologies to shift the tide. But what if their strategy is not only flawed, but dangerous? The Truth about Nature follows environmental actors as they turn to the internet to save nature. It documents how conservation efforts are transformed through the political economy of platforms and the algorithmic feeds that have been instrumental to the rise of post-truth politics. Developing a novel account of post-truth as an expression of power under platform capitalism, Bram Büscher shows how environmental actors attempt to mediate between structural forms of platform power and the contingent histories and contexts of particular environmental issues. Bringing efforts at wildlife protection in Southern Africa into dialogue with a sweeping analysis of truth and power in the twenty-first century, Büscher makes the case for a new environmental politics that radically reignites the art of speaking truth to power.
