The idea of this book on "Neglected Aspects of Motion-Event Description" comes from the observation that, over the last 30 years, much attention has been devoted to the manner/path divide in relation to the distinction between Verb-Framed and Satellite-Framed languages. This mainstream focus has left aside other aspects of motion event descriptions. The chapters of this volume take an in-depth look at three less-studied aspects of motion expression. The first part of the book focuses on directional deixis, especially in relation to associated motion and visual motion. The second part explores variations in Source-Goal asymmetries. The third part investigates different types of motion event constructions, e.g., with various types of co-events. Many languages are taken into consideration throughout the 11 chapters, which gives the volume a clear typological dimension. This book is intended for students and academics interested in motion, spatial semantics, typological variation and cognitive linguistics.

An understanding of severe and unusual weather should be a fundamental part of everyone's storehouse of knowledge. We live in a world that is at least occasionally dominated by severe and unusual weather. Many types of severe weather are sufficiently rare that a common defense mechanism of many people is to assume that they will never be directly affected. However, there is hardly a place in the whole world that does not have some peculiar aspect of weather that requires some degree of understanding and preparedness in order to avoid loss of property and, perhaps, even life itself. Fortunately, no particular location has all the different kinds of unusual and severe weather; thus, coastal areas are exposed to the tremendous power of the hurricane that bring high winds and frequently produce flood conditions, while within the interior United States, where hurricanes are not a threat, such severe types of weather as tornadoes, hailstorms, and blizzards are sufficiently frequent that an understanding of these storms is essential when traveling or living in this part of the United States. Although lightning is a greater hazard in some parts of the world than others, there are very few locations, including Alaska and the Desert Southwest, where occasional severe thunderstorms do not develop numerous lightning strokes. A proper understanding is important for flash flooding, derechos, mountainadoes, haboobs and other unusual weather. Welcome to the proceedings of the 5th Paci?c Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM 2004) held in Tokyo Waterfront City, Japan, November 30–December 3, 2004. Following the success of the preceding conferences, PCM 2000 in Sydney, PCM 2001 in Beijing, PCM 2002 in Hsinchu, and PCM 2003 in Singapore, the ?fth PCM brought together the researchers, developers, practitioners, and educators in the ?eld of multimedia. Theoretical breakthroughs and practical systems were presented at this conference, thanks to the support of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, IEEE Region 10 and IEEE Japan Council, ACM SIGMM, IEICE and ITE. When Communist revolutionaries seized control of Mainland China in 1949, they faced enormous challenges of state and nation building. China occupied a vast territory, had a huge and poorly integrated population and suffered from a woefully backward economy. Building a Socialist Chinese state required effectively managing significant opposition to the imposition of the Communist regime. This study examines how the Chinese Communist Party employed language as an essential part of its strategy to achieving these goals.

Beginning with his doctoral dissertation in 1950 which introduced the study of event perception and the application of vector analysis to perception, Gunnar Johansson has been a seminal figure in the field of perception. His work on biomechanical motion in the 1970s challenged conventional notions and stimulated great interest among experimental psychologists and students of machine vision. In 1989 Johansson published his latest theoretical synthesis, the optic sphere theory, an innovative conceptualization that goes beyond his earlier proposals. This volume presents -- for the first time -- an extensive precis of the out-of-print classic 1950 monograph prepared by Johansson. It also includes a representative set of Johansson's important publications produced over the ensuing four decades. These papers served as the springboard for a set of original essays by a distinguished group of North American and European scientists.
