Nels has arrived on the surface of Ararat. He plans to set up a camp near the colony and show the members how to adapt to Ararat's environment. But the colony does not want his help, so Nels plans on living alone. He soon learns that being prepared for Ararat's atmospheric conditions is not enough to survive. Can he find native foods that meet his requirements? How must he adjust when some of the colony members escape and join him? Does the future of humanity depend on finding answers to Ararat's challenges?

This report summarizes characteristics of students with disabilities in the National Education Longitudinal Study (nels:88), which conducted a base-year survey in 1988 of all U.S. public and private schools containing eighth grades, followed up at 2-year intervals in 1990, 1992, and 1994. Among general observations are the following: (1) students identified in nels:88 as disabled tended to have greater difficulties in school and realized fewer positive outcomes of schooling; (2) relatively small percentages of students with disabilities as identified by nels:88 perceived themselves or were identified by school officials as having received special education services during high school; and (3) teachers in nels:88 were perceptive judges of which students were failing to perform well in the classroom, but linking the identification of disability status to classroom performance may blur the distinction between students with disabilities and students at risk. After an introductory chapter, individual chapters address the following issues concerning students with disabilities: disability identification, students' background characteristics, school experiences, and educational outcomes. A concluding chapter lists characteristics of populations identified as disabled by both parents and teachers and only by teachers, not by parents. Four appendices list nels:88 indicators of disability, nels:88 disability estimates based on alternative disability definitions, and research/technical notes. (Contains 12 references.) (Db).

“The Sons of Nels Swenson” is a coming-of-age story of four young teens whose lives connect as they struggle to move into maturity. Mario Fontanini, grandson of the Swenson’s, is studious, computer savvy, small in stature, and has health issues not conducive to farm work, but he contributes to the business in many other ways. Hans Swenson, their son, is built for farm life, a sports enthusiast, and protector of Mario, and Lupita Morales, the migrant worker’s daughter. Bobby Bengtson lives on a small neighboring pig farm and prides himself with being the school bully, a pretty good liar, and a permanent fixture in the principal’s office. The relationship of these teenagers promises to be a heart rendering tale of social issues with their peers, domestic abuse, death, and first love as they make their way to becoming responsible adults.

This is the first report of a two-part project that estimates the determinants of individual enlistment decisions using the 1992 and 1994 wave of the National Educational Longitudinal Study (NELS).
