Nelson S Duchy

BOOK EXCERPT:

This unique book describes the history of the Duchy of Bronte, the Sicilian estate given to Admiral Lord Nelson by the grateful Neopolitan Bourbons in 1799 for saving them from the revolutionary mob and the French army, an extraordinary anomaly in a remote and beautiful setting. This book describes not only the story of the estate and its very foreign owners, but also that of the English in Eastern Sicily during the 19th and 20th centuries. Not only was the Castello di Maniace the seat of a dukedom, but the estate had been one of Sicily's greatest mediaeval abbeys and played a significant part in the island's past. The book contains maps and photographs from a collection long dispersed, sadly the last Duke of Bronte sold the property over twenty years ago so they document a way of life that no longer exists. All facets of an unusual Anglo-Sicilian relationship, with mutual miscomprehension usually uppermost, are recorded here, sometimes touchingly.

The 49th Golden Age Of Science Fiction Megapack Nelson S Bond

BOOK EXCERPT:

Nelson Slade Bond (1908-2006) had a remarkable career as a science fiction writer. He wrote extensively for books, radio, television and the stage, and especially the pulp magazines. Like Ray Bradbury, he did his journeyman work in the science fiction pulps before graduating to the higher-paying “slick” magazines like Bluebook. The quality of his work was such that Arkham House, Gnome Press, Prime Press, and Doubleday issued collections of his early short stories. At Wildside Press, we were fortunate enough to work with him in his twilight years, and we reprinted his "Lancelog Biggs, Spaceman" collection, as well as a solo work, "That Worlds May Live," and made him the Featured Author of an early issue of Adventure Tales magazine. This volume includes: TROUBLE ON TYCHO SHADRACH THE LORELEI DEATH BEYOND LIGHT CAPTAIN CHAOS COLOSSUS OF CHAOS DICTATOR OF TIME LIGHTER THAN YOU THINK REVOLT ON IO THE BALLAD OF VENUS NELL THE CASTAWAY THE ULTIMATE SALIENT THE BALLAD OF BLASTER BILL If you enjoy this volume, search your favorite ebook store for "Wildside Press MEGAPACK" to see the 400+ other entries in the series, covering science fiction, modern authors, mysteries, westerns, classics, adventure stories, and much, much more!

Nelson

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The most authoritative and intimate portrait written of Horatio Nelson In this epic biography of British history's most celebrated naval commander, acclaimed historian John Sugden separates fact from myth to offer a powerful portrait of the military hero of Trafalgar. As was true of the Sugden's riveting account of Horatio Nelson's early years (Nelson: A Dream of Glory, 2005), this comprehensive life of Lord Nelson is built from largely overlooked primary documents, letters, and diaries that reach across two centuries to invite us to share Nelson's multifaceted life in the Napoleonic Wars. The Sword of Albion offers the sweep and intimacy of first-rate historical fiction—revealing the interior lives, for example, of Lord Nelson's wife, Fanny and family and the caring and more passionate Emma, Lady Hamilton, who nursed the war-weary hero back to health in Naples and London after his brilliant victory over the Spanish fleet at Cape St. Vincent in 1797 and the stunning defeat at Tenerife that cost Nelson his right arm. Today's reader comes to understand that every obstacle in Nelson's path was attacked head-on with an Achilles-like ferocity and resolve. Yet his life was no steady upward trajectory; it was instead plagued by injuries and debt for the commoner admiral in a royal navy and English society dominated by lineage and property. As Sugden points out, "His life was a mission with the essence of a tour de force, hurrying toward a bloody climax that would change the fate of empires."
