BOOK EXCERPT:

Neuropsychopharmacology reviews the principles of pharmacology with a focus on the central nervous system and autonomic nervous system. Beyond autonomic and central nervous system pharmacology, this volume uniquely discusses psychiatric disorders and the pharmacological interventions that are available for conditions including depression, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders. With a focus on these specific body systems, readers will see end-of-chapter questions that offer real-world case studies, as well as multiple-choice questions for further learning. Beneficial features and content also include two extensive examination tests, which each contain 100 questions for better learning or to be used in teaching, and a glossary. Helpful appendices cover high-alert medications and toxicology effects on the nervous system. Each chapter will contain classifications of medications, pharmacokinetics, mechanism of action, clinical indications and toxicities. - Describes pharmacology principles pertaining to the central and autonomic nervous system - Identifies pharmacological interventions for psychiatric disorders including current evidence-based interventions for depression, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders - Features chapter outlines, end-of-chapter questions, real-world case studies and examinations for deeper learning or teaching

Neuropsychopharmacology And Therapeutics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Neuropsychopharmacology is a relatively new subject area in the neurosciences. It is a field of study that describes the effects of drugs from the molecular to the behavioural level and requires integration and synthesis of knowledge from various disciplines including neuroanatomy, physiology, molecular biology, pharmacology and the behavioural sciences. The principal aims of this book are to provide students with a clear understanding of CNS disorders, and an appreciation of how basic and clinical research findings can be translated into therapeutics. After an introduction to the subject area, the remaining chapters are focused on reviewing the main psychiatric and neurological disorders that are covered in most courses. They are discussed in terms of their clinical symptoms, epidemiology, pathology, aetiology, underlying neurobiological and neurochemical mechanisms, pharmacotherapy, adjunctive non-pharmacological treatments, and clinical outcomes. Each chapter of the book is a ‘stand-alone’ chapter and is written in a clear, accessible style. Written by an author with many years teaching and research experience, this textbook will prove invaluable for students of pharmacology, pharmacy and the medical sciences needing a truly integrated introduction to this exciting field.

Translational Neuropsychopharmacology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book covers wide areas of animal and human psychopharmacology with clinical utility in the treatment of psychiatric and neurological (e.g Alzheimer's disease) disorders. The main theme is to develop a new paradigm for drug discovery that questions the claim that animal models or assays fail adequately to predict Phase 3 clinical trials. A new paradigm is advocated that stresses the importance of intermediate staging points between these extremes that depend on suitable translation of findings from animal studies to Phase 1 or Phase 2 studies utilising experimental medicine.

Introduction To Neuropsychopharmacology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Introduction to Neuropsychopharmacology expands on the molecular and cellular foundations of the classic Biochemical Basis of Neuropharmacology, Eighth Edition (Cooper, Bloom, and Roth) by now including the behavioral methods used to study psychoactive drugs in experimental animals and in humans. Authored by four founders of modern neuroscience, this concise and comprehensive text covers the current series of medications used to treat diseases of the brain and nervous system--both psychiatric and neurologic--as well as legal and illegal recreational drugs and the neuroscientific information that explains how these medications act on the brain from the molecular to the clinical level. The text ranges from drugs that affect the mood and behavior to hypnotics, narcotics, anticonvulsants, and analgesics.

New Frontiers In The Neuropsychopharmacology Of Mental Illness

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In recent years, mental illnesses have become recognized as a huge emotional and financial burden to the individual, their relatives and society at large. Stress-related and mood disorders as well as psychoactive substance abuse are among the disorders associated with most disability in high income countries. Suicide, which is often attributed to some underlying mental disorders, is a leading cause of death among teenagers and young adults. At the same time, mental disorders pose some of the toughest challenges in neuroscience research. There are many different categories of mental disorder as defined and classified by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases 10th Revision (ICD-10). Despite the ongoing improvements of those widely used manuals, the validity and reliability of their diagnoses remain a constant debate. However, it has now become accepted by the scientific community that mental disorders can arise from multiple sources. In that regard, both clinical and animal studies looking at gene-environment interactions have helped to better understand the mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology as well as the discovery of treatments for mental disorders. This Research Topic aims to cover recent progress in research studying how genetic make-up and environmental factors (such as stress paradigm or pharmacological treatment) can contribute to the development of mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. This Research Topic also seeks to highlight studies looking at affective-like disorders following the intake of drugs of abuse. We also welcome all research articles, review papers, brief communications, and commentary on topics related to the broad field of Neuropsychopharmacology.
