This 14th volume of Advanaes in Neurosurgery includes the papers presented at the 36th Annual Meeting of the German Society of Neurosurgery in Berlin, May 12-15, 1985. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the program committee of the Society, Priv.-Doz. Dr. Klinger, Professors Brock, Dietz, Frowein, Lausberg, Wlillenweber, and Dr. Reuter for their assistance in selecting the contributions and in organizing the scientific program. The first main topic of the meeting was Spinal Cord Tumors. Introductory lectures dealing with basic anatomic knowledge, neuropathological as pects, and neurologic problems were followed by reports on examinations using conventional neuroradiology, scintiscanning, computer tomography as well as the most recent method in the diagnosis of spinal tumors, the magnetic resonance tomography. Also presented were the results of a multicentered study on spinal tumors, ascertained in cooperation with 43 German and Austrian neurosurgical clinics. The participants reported in great detail on the statistical data they recorded from 3056 cases and on the scientific findings obtained from this study. The session concluded with lectures on the possibilities for surgical treatment of spinal tumors and on oncologic and radiotherapeutic mea sures. E:x:perimental Neurosurgery was the second main topic. Leading authorities in the field presented interesting papers on topics such as the therapy of vasculogenetic brain edema, the determination of neurotransmitters in brain tumors, results of cerebral blood flow measurement, and im proved operative techniques using laser radiation.

Neuromonitoring is the tool of trade in intensive care, and should incorporate cutting edge technology with patience, repeated clinical observation, careful identification of neuroworsening. The aim of the book is to be of practical use, and to assist the clinical practice of the busy physician. The clinical examination belongs to the introductory section of the book, and an abundance of technology, with specific emphasis on the importance of intracranial pressure, comes in the following parts. Since the patient with an injured brain can have chances only if other organs and systems (as the lungs, and the acid-base equilibrium etc.) are preserved, a section of the book covers the interactions between the affected brain and other organs. The way the brain reacts to different insults has common aspects, as inflammatory responses, edema etc., but also specific features. Sections five to nine summarize the most relevant pathologies, from ischemic to hemorrhagic lesions, trauma, tumors etc. and also mentions new‑comers, as the specific problems related to the expanding field of neuroradiological interventions. Finally, neurointensive care does not exist without knowledgeable nurses. The intracranial pressure measurement starts (or unfortunately ends) with a catheter well maintained, and that becomes vital when the drainage of hydrocephalus is concerned. Dealing with patients with severe brain damage has plenty of ethical implications, up to the problems related to brain death and organ donation. This book is published in two volumes.

Surgical Intensive Care Medicine has been specifically designed to be a practical reference for medical students and house officers to help manage the critically ill surgical patient. The first section is titled “Resuscitation” and exposes the reader to a condensed version of generic topics in primary intensive care medicine. The sections that follow have been categorized according to medical and surgical subspecialties and cover the most germane of problems encountered in a tertiary surgical intensive care unit. Sections of certain chapters, while repetitive, have been left intact in an attempt to maintain the authors' messages and provide the reader with some contradictory but referenced views. The technical chapters describe a very introductory approach to various exercises such as airway management and vascular cannulation.
