Neutral Squares Blanket

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

As crocheters, we are drawn to a project when it has aspects that will keep us interested in the work: color! design! variety! And yet, we all have loved ones who eschew those very things. How do we reconcile their tastes with our desire to crochet them something special? My own husband, when I told him I wanted to make him a blanket, responded with “ok, but only if it’s all one color.” He knew full well I would sooner make him nothing at all, then spend a few months crocheting with a single, lonely color. Oh! It bores me just to think about it! But I didn’t give up on him. In fact, what he said gave me an idea. If I kept the components simple, and I made them all in different shades of the same color, that wouldn’t be too flamboyant for him, and it would keep me interested in the project at the same time. And so the Neutral Squares Blanket was born. There’s no reason why you need to stick to browns here. Blues would still result in a simple, soothing design. Or grays. Or really any favorite color. If you have a more adventurous recipient in mind, by all means, use a variety of bright colors. If I make another, I’m considering a beach theme: 3 sandy colors, 3 blues, and 3 aquas. REQUIRED SKILLS The project is great for beginners! If you can: make a slip knot chain stitch slip stitch double-crochet stitch then you can do this. And if you can’t do these things, I’ve included resources that will help you learn. TOOLS AND MATERIALS This lap blanket measures 42”x51” and consists of fifteen rows of twelve squares. Roughly 3000 yards of Berroco Vintage (or other worsted weight washable wool blend) G (4mm) hook scissors yarn needle TOPICS COVERED More than just a simple crochet pattern, this ebook is like a mini-class. Each topic includes step-by-step instructions and photos where appropriate. You will learn: How to make a granny square How to join granny squares together as you go How to add a border to your blanket Plus: Choosing an alternate color scheme Thoughts on how to put together the squares (use a very specific order, or randomize?) A frugal variation Links to resources to help you learn more

May Baby Blanket

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

I crocheted this sweet little afghan for my baby niece before she was born. It seemed only natural to call it a May Baby Blanket, as both the designer (me!) and the recipient (baby!) have May birthdays. The blanket is comprised of twenty circles-in-squares, otherwise known as “squircles” and the color palette is a simple one of gray, white, and two shades of pink. If pink is not your thing (or your baby’s), it would be quite easy switch them out for two shades of blue, or a neutral aqua or yellow. With it’s small size, this is an ideal pattern to work on when time is of the essence. A fast crocheter could work this up in a weekend. It took me a few weeks of evenings to complete mine. If you have more time, consider adding some squares and taking the project from stroller size to crib size, and beyond! REQUIRED SKILLS You will need to know how to make a magic ring chain stitch slip stitch single crochet double crochet triple crochet A crochet chart for the motif and an assembly chart for the blanket are included with the pattern. TOOLS AND MATERIALS The May Baby Blanket measures 20”x24” and consists of five rows of four squares. You are welcome to make your blanket larger, but you will need to adjust the yarn quantity accordingly. 6 hanks of Berroco Vintage, or comparable worsted-weight yarn (roughly 1200 yards) in shades of pink and gray G (4mm) hook scissors yarn needle TOPICS COVERED IN THE TUTORIAL More than just a simple crochet pattern, this ebook is like a mini-class. Each topic includes step-by-step instructions and photos where appropriate. You will learn: How to crochet a circle How to transform a circle shape into a square without losing any of the center circle’s roundness How to join motifs together as you go How to add a scalloped border to your blanket Plus: Ideas for different color schemes A variation to try Resources

Revolution Squared

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In Revolution Squared Atef Shahat Said examines the 2011 Egyptian Revolution to trace the expansive range of liberatory possibilities and containment at the heart of every revolution. Drawing on historical analysis and his own participation in the revolution, Said outlines the importance of Tahrir Square and other physical spaces as well as the role of social media and digital spaces. He develops the notion of lived contingency—the ways revolutionary actors practice and experience the revolution in terms of the actions they do or do not take—to show how Egyptians made sense of what was possible during the revolution. Said charts the lived contingencies of Egyptian revolutionaries from the decade prior to the revolution’s outbreak to its peak and the so-called transition to democracy to the 2013 military coup into the present. Contrary to retrospective accounts and counterrevolutionary thought, Said argues that the Egyptian Revolution was not doomed to defeat. Rather, he demonstrates that Egyptians did not fully grasp their immense clout and that limited reformist demands reduced the revolution’s potential for transformation.
