Much has been written and structures have been erected to commemorate the lives lost in the Holocaust. This book will focus upon what “living” has meant for those who survived. Through a series of case studies based upon carefully selected films, the ongoing impact of the traumas suffered by first- and second-generation survivors are carefully examined. Almost without exception, these films were either written, directed, or starred in a lead role a first- or second-generation survivor and, therefore, present an informed representation of what these people continue to experience. Film has come to be the most successful means of delivering the message of the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel said that the worst of alternatives would be that the message of the Holocaust would be delivered with “nothing changed.” Hopefully, the message delivered by this book and its case studies will make some small contribution toward a realization of its title, Never Again!

This book is a unique compilation of essays about the genocidal persecution fuelling the Nazi regime in World War II. Written by world-renowned experts in the field, it confronts a vitally important and exceedingly difficult topic with sensitivity, courage, and wisdom, furthering our understanding of the Holocaust/Shoah psychoanalytically, historically, and through the arts. Authors from four continents offer their perspectives, clinical experiences, findings, and personal narratives on such subjects as resilience, remembrance, giving testimony, aging, and mourning. As a result, contemporary thought about trauma, dissociation, self psychology, and relational psychology were greatly influenced by these pioneers, whose ideas have evolved since then. This long-awaited text is the definitive update and elaboration of their original contributions.

This book offers the first detailed reception history of adaptations of Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations from 1800-2020. By focusing on ways the piece has been arranged, transcribed, and reworked, or quoted in in film, dance, literature, visual art, and digital media, it reveals changing views about the role of the composer and score that have impacted recent performance practices and notions of the work concept. Beyond this, it features the work of composers, many from underrepresented backgrounds, who have recently deconstructed Bach by reimagining the subjects, compositional procedures, and forms, using contemporary compositional approaches.

By the time he had concluded twelve years on prime-time television, Archie Bunker had raised a Jewish child in his home, befriended a black Jew, gone into business with a Jewish partner, enrolled as a member of Temple Beth Shalom, eulogized his close friend at a Jewish funeral, hosted a Friday evening Sabbath dinner, participated in a bar mitzvah ceremony, and joined a group to fight synagogue vandalism. While the famed style of All in the Family was unique, its inclusions of Jews and Jewish issues was far from unusual. On the whole, Jewish issues have been portrayed with respect and relative depth during five decades of television programming. This work documents and examines the portrayal of Jewish themes in popular prime time television, from 1948 through the 1996-1997 television season, focusing on how such topics as anti-Semitism, intermarriage, Jewish lore and traditions, Israel, the Holocaust, and questions of Jewish identity have been featured in numerous television genres. How real-life attitudes about Jews and Jewish issues are reflected in television portrayals is also explored.

Beyond MAUS. The Legacy of Holocaust Comics collects 16 contributions that shed new light on the representation of the Holocaust. While MAUS by Art Spiegelman has changed the perspectives, other comics and series of drawings, some produced while the Holocaust happened, are often not recognised by a wider public. A plethora of works still waits to be discovered, like early caricatures and comics referring to the extermination of the Jews, graphic series by survivors or horror stories from 1950s comic books. The volume provides overviews about the depictions of Jews as animals, the representation of prisoner societies in comics as well as in depth studies about distorted traces of the Holocaust in Hergé's Tintin and in Spirou, the Holocaust in Mangas, and Holocaust comics in Poland and Israel, recent graphic novels and the use of these comics in schools. With contributions from different disciplines, the volume also grants new perspectives on comic scholarship.

In the last 15 years, queer movements in many parts of the world have helped secure the rights of queer people. These moments have been accompanied by the brutal rise of crony capitalism, the violent consequences of the ‘war on terror’, the hyper-juridification of politics, the financialization/ managerialization of social movements and the medicalization of non-heteronormative identities/ practices. How do we critically read the celebratory global proliferation of queer rights in these neoliberal times? This volume responds to the complicated moment in the history of queer struggles by analysing laws, state policies and cultures of activism, to show how new intimacies between queer sexuality and neoliberalism that celebrate modernity and the birth of the liberated sexual citizen, are in fact, reproducing the old colonial desire of civilizing the native. By paying particular attention to the problematics of race, religion and class, this volume engages in a rigorous, self-reflexive critique of global queer politics and its engagements, confrontations, and negotiations with modernity and its investments in liberalism, legalism and militarism, with the objective of queering the ethics of our queer politics.
