New Concepts In Cerebral Ischemia

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Approximately half a million Americans suffer brain ischemic episodes every year. These brain strokes are the third leading cause of death in the United States and the number-one cause of permanent disability. Over the past decade, we have made extensive attempts to understand the biological mechanisms that underlie stroke-induced neuronal injury.

New Trends In Brain Hypoxia Ischemia Research

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book presents recent and significant research from around the world dedicated to brain hypoxia-ischemia which is a disorder characterised by a reduction in oxygen supply (hypoxia) combined with reduced blood flow (ischemia) to the brain. This condition may result from a localised obstruction of a cerebral artery or from systemic hypoperfusion. Prolonged hypoxia-ischemia is associated with ischemic attack, transient; brain infarction; brain edema; coma; and other conditions.

Advances In The Preclinical Study Of Ischemic Stroke

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book reports innovations in the preclinical study of stroke, including - novel tools and findings in animal models of stroke, - novel biochemical mechanisms through which ischemic damage may be both generated and limited, - novel pathways to neuroprotection. Although hypothermia has been so far the sole "neuroprotection" treatment that has survived the translation from preclinical to clinical studies, progress in both preclinical studies and in the design of clinical trials will hopefully provide more and better treatments for ischemic stroke. This book aims at providing the preclinical scientist with innovative knowledge and tools to investigate novel mechanisms of, and treatments for, ischemic brain damage.

Brain Ischemia

BOOK EXCERPT:

Professor Caplan has extensively edited the book to shape and organize the contents into a succinct presentation by experts of the basic science and clinical aspects of the topic. The text has been divided into sections: The Brain.- Macroscopic and microscopic molecular aspects of brain ischemia, including pathophysiology, pathology, biochemistry, and clinical measurement.- Blood Vessels.- Their constitution and the pathology and physiology of the endothelium and arterial wall.- Blood Flow.- Its physics, control, rheology, and pathophysiology.- Blood.- The role of the cellular and serological constituents in coagulation and fibrinolysis. - Heart.- Sources of embolism and cardiac changes caused by brain ischemia.- And Epidemiology, Databases, and Trials. Prefatory remarks by Professor Caplan introduce each section. At the end of each section he relates the basic concepts to patient problems in the clinic, integrates the various contributions in the section, and covers other areas not discussed by the individual contributors.

New Trends In Management Of Cerebro Vascular Malformations

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Every so often a gathering of minds and experience occurs that results in an all encompassing overview in depth of such a vast subject as Cerebro-Vascular Malformations, as occurred in Verona in June 1992 and which warrants publication. Professors Da Pian and Pasqualin deserve high compliment and it is a measure of the respect in which they are held that virtually all those most knowledgeable around the world attended, presented their work and thoughts and contributed to intense discussion. Ljunggren's opening historical survey set the stage and must be the most comprehensive yet published. Subarachnoid hemorrhage from aneurysm rupture still constitutes, I dare say, the most difficult problem for neurosurgeons, in relief of the brain injury and arterial reaction and the technical perfection of aneurysm obliteration, even for small, as well as large and giant sacs. Very large high flow A VMs can be as demanding too. The bulk of the conference was devoted to subarachnoid hemorrhage, aneurysms and A VMs which were discussed under about 14 headings each. But vein of Galen malformations, dural A VMs, cavernous angiomas and venous angiomas (renamed developmental venous anomalies) came under scrutiny, not always with consensus. Trends are perceptible such as fibrinolysis of subarachnoid clot, non surgery for Galenic and dural malforma tions, the benignity of venous angioma, but there is still much variation in approach, pharmacologically, technically and with such as the evolving endovascular and radiosurgical stories, used alone or in conjunction.

Lycium Barbarum And Human Health

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book seeks to unravel the mysteries of wolfberry, and systematically introduces its mechanisms in preventing aging-associated diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, inflammation, liver and neurodegenerative diseases. Wolfberry, the dried fruit of Lycium barbarum, is an anti-aging herbal medicine. There have been numerous reports investigating the underlying mechanisms of its anti-aging effects and its role in preventing pathological changes in many aging-associated diseases. Its holistic effects on the body can attenuate liver toxicity and combat the spread of cancer; it also prevents degeneration in the central nervous system, and can even positively affect the skin. As such, wolfberry has become a very popular food supplement around the world. This book will serve as an excellent reference source for researchers and graduate students studying herbal medicine and aging-associated diseases, while also providing insights for the pharmaceutical industry with regard to developing potential drugs for these diseases.

Warlow S Stroke

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A practical textbook, based on a problem-oriented workflow, that will improve patients' likelihood of full recovery from stroke and prevent future strokes from occurring Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability and is in the top five causes of death globally. Warlow's Stroke: Practical Management, 4th Edition takes a problem-oriented approach and addresses the questions posed by a stroke patient in the order they are likely to present in clinical practice, for instance, 'Is it a stroke?', 'What sort of stroke?', 'What caused it?', and 'What can be done about it?'. Beginning with chapters phrased as questions, the book walks the reader through a standard clinical workflow, exploring the practical skills and assessment required at each stage of patient management. Early chapters cover: locating the vascular lesion, identifying the involved arterial territory, the role imaging should play, and the application thereof. Subsequent chapters look at what causes a transient or persistent ischemic event, an intracerebral hemorrhage and a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Unusual causes of ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack are also covered. The book then presents a practical approach to the management of stroke and transient ischemic attack; offers specific treatments for acute ischemic stroke and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage; provides ways for professionals to prevent first or recurrent stroke; and more. Final chapters of the book discuss rehabilitation after stroke, how patients and carers can be supported in the short term and long term, prevention of recurrent stroke, and the organization of stroke services. Warlow's Stroke: Practical Management, 4th Edition Follows clinical workflow for stroke analysis Features evidence-based approach throughout Offers practical application aimed at improving patient outcomes Written and edited by internationally renowned experts in the field An essential resource for all practitioners involved in the care of patients who suffer from cerebrovascular disease, but particularly suitable for neurologists, residents, geriatricians, stroke physicians, radiologists and primary care physicians.
