This volume contains invited papers and communications presented at the Third European Workshop Meeting on Selective Oxidation by Heterogeneous Catalysis. The purpose of the meeting was to present recent results and to discuss new aspects of partial oxidation by heterogeneous catalysis. The following topics were discussed: Novel processes for obtaining new fine chemicals by catalytic partial oxidation; selective oxidation and oxidative dehydrogenation of alkanes; new catalysts and advances in preparation methods of oxidation catalysts; new phenomena in partial oxidation and new aspects of surface chemistry in oxide catalysts; new applications of physicochemical methods for characterization of oxide catalysts; oxidation with other agents than oxygen and catalytic oxidation of carbohydrates. This book will provide a valuable set of data on reactions of selective oxidation which will be extremely useful to catalyst and related practitioners, whether fundamentalists or highly applied, and to process engineers who wish to evaluate current findings in this field. This volume of Studies in Surface Science and Catalysis contains the Proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on the Scientific Bases for the Preparation of Heterogeneous Catalysts, held on the campus of the "Universit catholique de Louvain" (UCL) in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, on September 10-14, 2006. This series of symposia was initiated in 1975 on a regular 4-year interval basis. The Symposium covered the following topics: key aspects in catalysts preparation, micro- and mesoporous supports, supported metal catalysts, structured catalysts, tailored zeolites, catalysis by bases, and catalysts for fuel production. These topics served as guidelines for the sessions both in the programs of oral communications (41 contributions including 7 keynote communications – one for each topic) and poster presentations (101 contributions). The overall theme of the 3rd World Congress is "Atom Efficient Catalytic Oxidations for Global Technologies". This theme was chosen to stimulate the participants to report their findings with an emphasis on conserving valuable material in their catalytic transformations, as well as conserving energy, in an environmentally responsible manner. Progress towards this stated goal is substantial as evidenced by the tremendous response of the community in their participation of quality publications complied in these Proceedings of the Congress.The subjects presented span a wide range of oxidation reactions and catalysts. These include the currently important area of lower alkane oxidation to the corresponding olefins, unsaturated aldehydes, acids and nitriles.The four featured lectures and seven plenary lectures constitute the general background and overview of the subject matter at hand. This book comprises the proceedings of a NATO sponsored Advanced Research Workshop held from 1st November to 6th November 1992 in the delightful Chateau de Florans, Bedoin, Vaucluse, France and entitled 'Elementary Reaction Steps in Heterogeneous Catalysis. ' The organisers are grateful to the Science Committee of NATO for their support of this meeting. This is believed to be the first wide ranging NATO ARW in the field of heterogeneous catalysis for 20 years, following a previous venture organised in Sardinia by Basolo and Burwell, of Northwestern University, Illinois, USA [1]. This volume collects the lecture presentations and reports on the lively Panel discussions. The idea for the meeting evolved from a series of International Symposia on Quantum Chemistry and Mechanism in Heterogeneous Catalysis. The first of these was held in Lyon, France in 1986, the second in Krakow, Poland in 1988 and the third in Berkeley, California in 1990. The organising committee of the present meeting was Bernard Bigot, France, Tony Farragher, Netherlands, Richard Joyner, UK, Mme. Danielle Olivier, France, and Rutger van Santen, Netherlands, (Chairman). We wish to thank all members of the committee but in particular Bernard Bigot, who undertook the very extensive work involved in the local organisation with consummate skill and made our stay in Provence a great pleasure. This volume was conceived as a handbook for the Pre-Conference Summer School on Zeolites, held in Taejon, Korea. The 11th IZC Summer School was organized to acquaint those already actively working in zeolite science and technology with the latest developments and to develop new prospects of zeolite science and technology for the 21st century.The aim of this volume is to give an extensive review and analysis of the important new findings of the last 10 years on the synthesis, characterization and applications of zeolite materials as well as the prediction of new R&D directions for the next decade.
