BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume presents a new mathematical theory of generalized functions, more general than Distribution Theory, giving a rigorous mathematical sense to any product of a finite number of distributions and to heuristic computations of Quantum Field Theory. Although the physical motivations are emphasized, the book is also addressed to mathematicians with no knowledge of physics. This work opens a new domain of research in both pure and applied mathematics.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The author's previous book `New Generalized Functions and Multiplication of Distributions' (North-Holland, 1984) introduced `new generalized functions' in order to explain heuristic computations of Physics and to give a meaning to any finite product of distributions. The aim here is to present these functions in a more direct and elementary way. In Part I, the reader is assumed to be familiar only with the concepts of open and compact subsets of R&eegr;, of C∞ functions of several real variables and with some rudiments of integration theory. Part II defines tempered generalized functions, i.e. generalized functions which are, in some sense, increasing at infinity no faster than a polynomial (as well as all their partial derivatives). Part III shows that, in this setting, the partial differential equations have new solutions. The results obtained show that this setting is perfectly adapted to the study of nonlinear partial differential equations, and indicate some new perspectives in this field.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book gathers peer-reviewed contributions representing modern trends in the theory of generalized functions and pseudo-differential operators. It is dedicated to Professor Michael Oberguggenberger (Innsbruck University, Austria) in honour of his 60th birthday. The topics covered were suggested by the ISAAC Group in Generalized Functions (GF) and the ISAAC Group in Pseudo-Differential Operators (IGPDO), which met at the 9th ISAAC congress in Krakow, Poland in August 2013. Topics include Columbeau algebras, ultra-distributions, partial differential equations, micro-local analysis, harmonic analysis, global analysis, geometry, quantization, mathematical physics, and time-frequency analysis. Featuring both essays and research articles, the book will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers working in analysis, PDE and mathematical physics, while also offering a valuable complement to the volumes on this topic previously published in the OT series.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book is the first volume of proceedings from the joint conference X International Symposium “Quantum Theory and Symmetries” (QTS-X) and XII International Workshop “Lie Theory and Its Applications in Physics” (LT-XII), held on 19–25 June 2017 in Varna, Bulgaria. The QTS series was founded on the core principle that symmetries underlie all descriptions of quantum systems. It has since evolved into a symposium at the forefront of theoretical and mathematical physics. The LT series covers the whole field of Lie theory in its widest sense, together with its applications in many areas of physics. As an interface between mathematics and physics, the workshop serves as a meeting place for mathematicians and theoretical and mathematical physicists. In dividing the material between the two volumes, the Editor has sought to select papers that are more oriented toward mathematics for the first volume, and those focusing more on physics for the second. However, this division is relative, since many papers are equally suitable for either volume. The topics addressed in this volume represent the latest trends in the fields covered by the joint conferences: representation theory, integrability, entanglement, quantum groups, number theory, conformal geometry, quantum affine superalgebras, noncommutative geometry. Further, they present various mathematical results: on minuscule modules, symmetry breaking operators, Kashiwara crystals, meta-conformal invariance, the superintegrable Zernike system.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Over the last years, stochastic analysis has had an enormous progress with the impetus originating from different branches of mathematics: PDE's and the Malliavin calculus, quantum physics, path space analysis on curved manifolds via probabilistic methods, and more. This volume contains selected contributions which were presented at the 8th Silivri Workshop on Stochastic Analysis and Related Topics, held in September 2000 in Gazimagusa, North Cyprus. The topics include stochastic control theory, generalized functions in a nonlinear setting, tangent spaces of manifold-valued paths with quasi-invariant measures, and applications in game theory, theoretical biology and theoretical physics. Contributors: A.E. Bashirov, A. Bensoussan and J. Frehse, U. Capar and H. Aktuglul, A.B. Cruzeiro and Kai-Nan Xiang, E. Hausenblas, Y. Ishikawa, N. Mahmudov, P. Malliavin and U. Taneri, N. Privault, A.S. stnel.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In 1961 Robinson introduced an entirely new version of the theory of infinitesimals, which he called `Nonstandard analysis'. `Nonstandard' here refers to the nature of new fields of numbers as defined by nonstandard models of the first-order theory of the reals. This system of numbers was closely related to the ring of Schmieden and Laugwitz, developed independently a few years earlier. During the last thirty years the use of nonstandard models in mathematics has taken its rightful place among the various methods employed by mathematicians. The contributions in this volume have been selected to present a panoramic view of the various directions in which nonstandard analysis is advancing, thus serving as a source of inspiration for future research. Papers have been grouped in sections dealing with analysis, topology and topological groups; probability theory; and mathematical physics. This volume can be used as a complementary text to courses in nonstandard analysis, and will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in both pure and applied mathematics and physics.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Pure and applied stochastic analysis and random fields form the subject of this book. The collection of articles on these topics represent the state of the art of the research in the field, with particular attention being devoted to stochastic models in finance. Some are review articles, others are original papers; taken together, they will apprise the reader of much of the current activity in the area.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Questions regarding the interplay of nonlinearity and the creation and propagation of singularities arise in a variety of fields-including nonlinear partial differential equations, noise-driven stochastic partial differential equations, general relativity, and geometry with singularities. A workshop held at the Erwin-Schrödinger International Institute for Mathematical Physics in Vienna investigated these questions and culminated in this volume of invited papers from experts in the fields of nonlinear partial differential equations, structure theory of generalized functions, geometry and general relativity, stochastic partial differential equations, and nonstandard analysis. The authors provide the latest research relevant to work in partial differential equations, mathematical physics, and nonlinear analysis. With a focus on applications, this books provides a compilation of recent approaches to the problem of singularities in nonlinear models. The theory of differential algebras of generalized functions serves as the central theme of the project, along with its interrelations with classical methods.
