Stock Pieces British Repertory Theatre 1760 1830

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

What do we gain from watching a familiar play for the nth time? This was a crucial question for Romantic-period theatre managers, who, to deliver varied programmes, relied on a repertoire of ‘stock’ entertainments performed in alternation with the latest plays. Repertory theatre was not new to the Romantic period, but it took on additional purchase at a time when the playhouse was not simply a site for entertainment but a government-controlled cultural institution and business, subject to sometimes extreme financial, political, and ideological pressures. Through an innovative selection of case studies drawn from deep archival research, Stock Pieces juxtaposes canonical with otherwise forgotten entertainments; unites the period’s professional and amateur dramatic cultures; and spans British metropolitan, provincial, and imperial geographies. The picture that emerges is fresh and compelling. Stock Pieces sheds light on the mechanics of stock piece status, the Romantic afterlives of Shakespeare’s near contemporaries (whose popular appeal declined as his increased), and the work of various agents (from pantomime arrangers to enslaved performers in Jamaica) who contested the repertoire’s received aesthetic and cultural values. It also explores the extent to which investments in the abolitionist cause were remediated by stock pieces that revived and reenacted the spectral violence of slavery and the slave trade – for various purposes. Stock Pieces showcases how the Romantic-period dramatic repertoire could be mobilised to signify social and political practices that operated outside the theatrical institution, crossed national borders, and dared to effect real change.

Index And Finding List Of Serials Published In The British Isles 1789 1832

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Growth of interest in the periodical literature of the past has emphasized increasingly the need for specialized hand lists, a need which the American Union List of Serials, the British Union Catalogue of the Periodical Publications in the University Libraries of the British Isles, and other existing indexes cannot answer. To satisfy one area of this need, William S. Ward has compiled a near-definitive index and finding list of periodicals and newspapers of the English Romantic period. In it are reflected the holdings of almost eleven hundred American, Canadian, and British libraries and newspaper offices. The volume is also the first to list titles and library locations of all the newspapers, magazines, and other serials published in the British Isles during the years between the French Revolution and the Great Reform Bill.

Models Of The History Of Philosophy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is the fourth volume of Models of the History of Philosophy, a collaborative work on the history of the history of philosophy dating from the Renaissance to the end of the nineteenth century. The volume covers the so-called Hegelian age, in which the approach to the past of philosophy is placed at the foundation of “doing philosophy”, up to identifying with the same philosophy. A philosophy which is however understood in a different way: as dialectical development, as hermeneutics, as organic development, as eclectic option, as a philosophy of experience, as a progressive search for truth through the repetition of errors... The material is divided into four large linguistic and cultural areas: the German, French, Italian and British. It offers the detailed analysis of 10 particularly significant works of the way of conceiving and reconstructing the “general” history of philosophy, from its origins to the contemporary age. This systematic exposure is preceded and accompanied by lengthy introductions on the historical background and references to numerous other works bordering on philosophical historiography.
