Ngos And Grassroots In Development Work In South India

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book provides an in-depth look at the realities of development and development work in the South Indian state of Tamilnadu. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, Moen Mathiot detailed the conditions of poverty facing rural, landless agricultural workers and the social, economic, and political contexts of development. Within these contexts, women and men in grassroots nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) struggle to assist the landless poor. At the same time, these development workers confront their own problems of family pressures, inadequate training, and insufficient resources to carry on their work. Moen Mathiot's book enables us to tap into the mindsets of grassroots development workers--their analysis of the problems, the strategies of change, and the obstacles that prevent them from accomplishing more. As NGOs are utilized to implement more and more development programs, understanding the realities of these workers becomes essential for both scholars and practitioners in the development studies field.

By examining how NGOs operate in Southern India in the early 2000’s, this book discusses the challenges faced by small, local NGOs in the uncertain times of changing aid dynamics. The key findings focus on what empowerment means for Indian women, and how NGO accountability to these groups is an important part of the empowerment being realised. The notion of community empowerment, in which the ‘solidarity’ of a group can be a path to individual empowerment, is discussed, as well as analysing how empowerment can be a useful concept in development. Based on case studies of 15 NGOs as well as in-depth interviews with 80 women’s self-help groups, the book highlights the key features of effective empowerment programs. The author uses innovative statistical analysis tools to show how a key factor in empowerment of marginalised women is the accountability relationship between themselves and the supporting NGO. The book goes on to discuss the ways that NGOs can work with communities in the future, and recognises the limitations of a donor-centric accountability framework. It provides a useful contribution to studies on South Asia as well as Gender and Development Studies.

Researching Development Ngos

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book offers a critical insight into how the study of NGOs can be more theoretically grounded and methodologically creative. The role of NGOs in global development has been the focus of considerable research and scholarship for the last four decades. More recently, scholars and NGO practitioners have begun to explore their relationships and how research can better inform practice and vice versa. This book addresses questions arising from such research, including: how different theoretical perspectives can be applied to the study of NGOs; what kinds of data can be used when trying to better understand NGOs; and what methods can be used in studying NGOs. Rather than evaluating the impact of NGO work, this is a book about how researchers and practitioners can better understand what NGOs do and how they operate. Bringing together work from a range of NGO researchers working across diverse disciplines and at varied stages of their academic careers, the collection is supported by recent case studies in the field as well as ‘dilemma boxes’ and discussion questions in every chapter. As such, Researching Development NGOs is an essential resource for postgraduate students of Research Methods in Development Studies, NGOs and Development Management as well as practitioners wanting to find out more about the sector.
