Nonparametric Statistical Methods For Complete And Censored Data

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Balancing the "cookbook" approach of some texts with the more mathematical approach of others, Nonparametric Statistical Methods for Complete and Censored Data introduces commonly used non-parametric methods for complete data and extends those methods to right censored data analysis. Whenever possible, the authors derive their methodology from the general theory of statistical inference and introduce the concepts intuitively for students with minimal backgrounds. Derivations and mathematical details are relegated to appendices at the end of each chapter, which allows students to easily proceed through each chapter without becoming bogged down in a lot of mathematics. In addition to the nonparametric methods for analyzing complete and censored data, the book covers optimal linear rank statistics, clinical equivalence, analysis of block designs, and precedence tests. To make the material more accessible and practical, the authors use SAS programs to illustrate the various methods included. Exercises in each chapter, SAS code, and a clear, accessible presentation make this an outstanding text for a one-semester senior or graduate-level course in nonparametric statistics for students in a variety of disciplines, from statistics and biostatistics to business, psychology, and the social scientists. Prerequisites: Students will need a solid background in calculus and a two-semester course in mathematical statistics.

Chi Squared Goodness Of Fit Tests For Censored Data

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book is devoted to the problems of construction and application of chi-squared goodness-of-fit tests for complete and censored data. Classical chi-squared tests assume that unknown distribution parameters are estimated using grouped data, but in practice this assumption is often forgotten. In this book, we consider modified chi-squared tests, which do not suffer from such a drawback. The authors provide examples of chi-squared tests for various distributions widely used in practice, and also consider chi-squared tests for the parametric proportional hazards model and accelerated failure time model, which are widely used in reliability and survival analysis. Particular attention is paid to the choice of grouping intervals and simulations. This book covers recent innovations in the field as well as important results previously only published in Russian. Chi-squared tests are compared with other goodness-of-fit tests (such as the Cramer-von Mises-Smirnov, Anderson-Darling and Zhang tests) in terms of power when testing close competing hypotheses.

Robust Rank Based And Nonparametric Methods

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The contributors to this volume include many of the distinguished researchers in this area. Many of these scholars have collaborated with Joseph McKean to develop underlying theory for these methods, obtain small sample corrections, and develop efficient algorithms for their computation. The papers cover the scope of the area, including robust nonparametric rank-based procedures through Bayesian and big data rank-based analyses. Areas of application include biostatistics and spatial areas. Over the last 30 years, robust rank-based and nonparametric methods have developed considerably. These procedures generalize traditional Wilcoxon-type methods for one- and two-sample location problems. Research into these procedures has culminated in complete analyses for many of the models used in practice including linear, generalized linear, mixed, and nonlinear models. Settings are both multivariate and univariate. With the development of R packages in these areas, computation of these procedures is easily shared with readers and implemented. This book is developed from the International Conference on Robust Rank-Based and Nonparametric Methods, held at Western Michigan University in April 2015.

A Contingency Table Approach To Nonparametric Testing

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Most texts on nonparametric techniques concentrate on location and linear-linear (correlation) tests, with less emphasis on dispersion effects and linear-quadratic tests. Tests for higher moment effects are virtually ignored. Using a fresh approach, A Contingency Table Approach to Nonparametric Testing unifies and extends the popular, standard test

Nonparametric Statistics For Applied Research

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Non-parametric methods are widely used for studying populations that take on a ranked order (such as movie reviews receiving one to four stars). The use of non-parametric methods may be necessary when data have a ranking but no clear numerical interpretation, such as when assessing preferences. In terms of levels of measurement, non-parametric methods result in "ordinal" data. As non-parametric methods make fewer assumptions, their applicability is much wider than the corresponding parametric methods. In particular, they may be applied in situations where less is known about the application in question. Also, due to the reliance on fewer assumptions, non-parametric methods are more robust. Non-parametric methods have many popular applications, and are widely used in research in the fields of the behavioral sciences and biomedicine. This is a textbook on non-parametric statistics for applied research. The authors propose to use a realistic yet mostly fictional situation and series of dialogues to illustrate in detail the statistical processes required to complete data analysis. This book draws on a readers existing elementary knowledge of statistical analyses to broaden his/her research capabilities. The material within the book is covered in such a way that someone with a very limited knowledge of statistics would be able to read and understand the concepts detailed in the text. The “real world” scenario to be presented involves a multidisciplinary team of behavioral, medical, crime analysis, and policy analysis professionals work together to answer specific empirical questions regarding real-world applied problems. The reader is introduced to the team and the data set, and through the course of the text follows the team as they progress through the decision making process of narrowing the data and the research questions to answer the applied problem. In this way, abstract statistical concepts are translated into concrete and specific language. This text uses one data set from which all examples are taken. This is radically different from other statistics books which provide a varied array of examples and data sets. Using only one data set facilitates reader-directed teaching and learning by providing multiple research questions which are integrated rather than using disparate examples and completely unrelated research questions and data.

69 pages of complete step-by-step instructions showing how to perform nearly every major type of nonparametric test and how to do them all in Excel. This e-manual will make you an expert on knowing exactly how and when to use and set up in Excel all types of nonparametric tests, such as the Mann Whitney U Test, the Kruskall Wallis Test, the Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test for both large and small samples, the Spearman Correlation Coefficient Test, the Sign Test, and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test for both large and small samples. This e-manual is loaded with completed examples and screenshots in Excel of all the above of nonparametric tests being performed. The instructions are clear and easy-to-follow but at the graduate level. If you are currently taking a difficult graduate-level statistics course that covers nonparametric or normality tests, you will find this e-manual to be an outstanding course supplement that will explain nonparametric tests much more clearly than your textbook does. If you are a business manager, you will really appreciate how easily and clearly this e-manual will show you how you can perform nonparametric tests in Excel to solve difficult statistical problems on your job. Nonparametric tests are the most important of all statistical tests in business, but are not widely understood. Nonparametric testing must nearly always be performed in place of most well-known statistics tests when it is not known that samples are being taken from a normally distributed population. This is more often the case than not, yet not many people have a working knowledge of nonparametric testing. You will. This e-manual will make you an Excel Statistical Master of nonparametric testing.
