This book explores non-traditional, 'critical' security issues in Northeast Asia. This exploration adopts an approach to critical security that emphasizes the play of identity and culture in the apprehension of insecurity understood primarily in existential terms. The study thus focuses upon the apprehension of insecurity derived from demographic pressures, resource limitations, ecological degradation, food politics, identificatory challenges, health threats, and political change. The study seeks to assess existing approaches to such threats and to propose alternatives that stress the importance of transnational co-operation as the principal means of tackling the complexity of contemporary societal insecurities in Northeast Asia.

Drawing on cutting-edge research from leading scholars, this book investigates state preferences for regime creation and assesses state capacity for executing these preferences in Northeast Asia’s energy domain, defined as the geographical area comprising the following countries: Russia, Mongolia, China, Japan, South Korea and North Korea. It examines questions pertaining to how states perceive the need and necessity for establishing a regime when it comes to the issue of energy and how much commitment they make to the effort in Northeast Asia. The book analyses the factors that shape each country’s fundamental energy interests in the region, how these interests impact their attitudes toward engaging the region on energy security and the way they carry out their regional engagement. Based on countries’ interests in promoting institutionalized regional energy cooperation and their capacity for forging that cooperation, the collection assesses each state’s role in contributing to an energy regime in Northeast Asia. It also contains some very troubling security flashpoints the Taiwan Strait, the Korean Peninsula, and the East China Sea. China s rapacious quest for energy and rapid industrial expansion have led to intense international competition with Japan and the United States and internal instability as well. North Korea poses two distinct environmental security threats: famine refugees and the regime s use of nuclear blackmail for subsidized energy.
