Winner of the Association for Jewish Libraries 2012 Judaica Bibliography Award! This is the first comprehensive bibliography on the Karaites and Karaism. Including over 8,000 items in twenty languages, this bibliography, with its extensive annotations, thoroughly documents the present state of Karaite Studies and provides a solid foundation for future research. Special attention has been given to the organizational structure of the bibliography. A detailed table of contents and a complete set of indices enable the reader to easily navigate through the material. Translations of items from non-Western languages increase the bibliography’s utility for the English-speaking reader. Especially noteworthy are the listings of obscure eastern European publications and the analysis of many periodical publications which enable unprecedented access to this material. It is an essential reference tool for Karaite and Jewish Studies. ̋This is an essential guide to any serious study of Karaism or of medieval (and to a large extent, also modern) Jewry. ̋ Shaul Stampfer, Hebrew University of Jerusalem "Bibliographia Karaitica is a major reference work that will remain of great use for Jewish studies scholars working in many areas of specialization long into the future." Fred Astren, San Francisco State University

queer [adj]: 1 differing from what is usual or ordinary; odd; singular; strange 2 slightly ill; 3 mentally unbalanced 4 counterfeit; not genuine 5 homosexual: in general usage, still chiefly a slang term of contempt or derision, but lately used by some as a descriptive term without negative connotations --Webster's Dictionary queer [adj]: used to describe a 1 body of theory 2 field of critical inquiry 3 way of proudly identifying a group of people 4 way of seeing the world 5 sense of difference from the norm -- David Shneer and Caryn Aviv, Queer in America, Now and Then Contrasting queer life today and in years past, this landmark book brings together autobiographies, poetry, film studies, maps, documents, laws, and other texts to explore the meaning and practice of the word queer. By this Shneer and Aviv mean: queer as both a form of social violence and a call to political activism; queer as played by Robin Williams and Sharon Stone and as lived by Matthew Shepard and Brandon Teena; queer in the courthouses of Washington D.C. and on the streets of hometown America. Contextualizing these contemporary stories with ones from the past, and understanding them through the analytic tools of feminist social criticism and history, the authors show what it means to be queer in America.

The only comprehensive and up-to-date look at Reform Judaism, this book analyzes the forces currently challenging the Reform movement, now the largest Jewish denomination in the United States. To distinguish itself from Orthodox and Conservative Judaism, the Reform movement tries to be an egalitarian, open, and innovative version of the faith true to the spirit of the tradition but nonetheless fully compatible with modern secular life. Promoting itself in this way, Reform Judaism has been tremendously successful in recruiting a variety of people—intermarried families, feminists, gays and lesbians, and interracial families among others—who resist more traditional forms of worship. As an unintended result of this success, the movement now struggles with an identity crisis brought on by its liberal theology, which teaches that each Jew is free to practice Judaism more or less as he or she pleases. In the absence of the authority that comes from a theology based on a commanding, all-powerful God, can Reform Judaism continue to thrive? Can it be broadly inclusive and still be uniquely and authentically Jewish? Taking this question as his point of departure, Dana Evan Kaplan provides a broad overview of the American Reform movement and its history, theology, and politics. He then takes a hard look at the challenges the movement faces as it attempts to reinvent itself in the new millennium. In so doing, Kaplan gives the reader a sense of where Reform Judaism has come from, where it stands on the major issues, and where it may be going. Addressing the issues that have confronted the movement—including the ordination of women, acceptance of homosexuality, the problem of assimilation, the question of rabbinic officiation at intermarriages, the struggle for acceptance in Israel, and Jewish education and others—Kaplan sheds light on the connection between Reform ideology and cultural realities. He unflinchingly, yet optimistically, assesses the movement’s future and cautions that stormy weather may be ahead.

Each chapter in this unique volume explores intersections of sex, religion, and media in our society. An interdisciplinary cast of contributors examines a wide variety of themes, including entertainment producers' roles in disseminating sexual and religious content; news coverage of stories about sex and religion; religious conservatives' efforts to influence media coverage of sex and 'values;' and how religious consumers are influenced by and react to sexual content in media.

In a landmark volume of new essays destined to reshape the parameters of future discourse on American Jews and their relationships to major ideologies and organization of our time, Lipset has brought together many of the finest social analysts of Jewish lifeâboth in the United States and overseas. Indeed, Canadian and Israeli perspectives add a comparative dimension that increases the special value of this book. S. N. Eisenstadt calls attention in his opening chapter to the thrust of the volume as a whole: a focus on the most distinguishing aspect of the American Jewish experienceâthe incorporation of Jews into all arenas and aspects of American life, and the effects of such incorporation on the structuring of Jewish life and self-perception. The work emphasizes the burgeoning of Jewish institutions, the visibility and acceptability of such institutions, and the changing Jewish definition of their collective identity. The work is conceived of as Festschrift, essays in honor of Earl Raab. Thus, the work has a community dimension that typifies Raab's work. The four essays in the final segmentâ"California is Different"âwill come as a pleasant bonus in a work that otherwise features the more global dimensions of Jewish life in America. The first section on the "North American Community" features essays by S. N. Eisenstadt, Nathan Glazer, Arnold Eisen, Chaim Waxman, and Morton Weinfield. The second section on "Politics" contains contributions by Irving Kristol, Carl Sheingold, Eyton Gilboa, and Alan Fisher. The third segment is on "Jewish Community Life" with essays by Daniel Elezar, Larry Ruben, and Arnold Dashevsky. This is, in short, a major collective statement by scholars long associated with the subject. It will be of interest to political scientists and sociologists interested in ethnic studies and Jewish life in America.

One in every six Israeli citizens is a Palestinian Arab. While much has been written about the Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza, the struggle for political rights by Palestinian citizens of Israel remains largely unexplored. Shany Payes offers a fresh look at this struggle through analysis of the increasingly growing sector of Palestinian non-governmental organisations. Charting the political history of these associations over the last quarter of a century and running right up to developments during the recent Intifada, she analyses the political repression of Palestinian civil society by the Israeli state and attempts by Palestinian NGOs in Israel to build a civil society in the face of such oppression. 'Palestinian NGOs' is required reading for all those interested in the Israel-Palestine conflict, minority rights and civil society. A lively and orginal contribution to a field in which there is already much interest but where few works of any substance have been produce. I enjoyed the work immensely, and would certainly recommend it warmly both to students and to those with a lively interest in things Palestinian - Philip Robins, St Antony's College, Oxford Provides a fresh insight into political repression of Palestinian civil society by the Israeli state and attempts by Palestinian NGOs to build a civil society in the face of such oppression...The result is a unique piece of work which other academics would be hard pressed to emulate - Gerard Clarke, Centre for Development Studies, University of Wales Swansea
