These proceedings contain descriptions of the latest experiments and results in a variety of hot topics, such as the growth of total cross sections, the ratio of real to imaginary parts of forward scattering amplitudes, etc. Current theories of particle interaction based on QCD were presented and confronted by the latest experimental results from FNAL, CERN, HERA and elsewhere. The theoretical situation seems less clear, or at least more open to argument and criticism, leveled by the different groups responsible and present at the workshop.

When, in the spring of 1979, H.P. Baltes presented me with the precursor of this vo 1 ume, the book on "Inverse Source Problems in Opti cs", I expressed my gratitude in a short note, 11hich in translation, reads: "Dear Dr. Ba ltes, the mere titl e of your unexpected gift evokes memori es of a period, which, in the terminology of your own contribution, would be described as the Stone Age of the Inverse Problem. Those were pleasant times. Walter Kohn and I lived in a cave by ourselves, drew pictures on the walls, and nobody seemed to care. Now, however, Inversion has become an Industry, which I contemplate with as much bewilderment as a surviving Tasmanian aborigine gazing at a modern oil refinery with its towers, its fl ares, and the confus i ng maze of its tubes." The present volume makes me feel even more aboriginal - impossible for me to fathom its content. What I can point out, however, is one of the forgotten origins of the Inverse Scattering Problem of Quantum Mechanics: Werner Heisenberg's "S-Matrix Theory" of 1943. This grandiose scheme had the purpose of eliminating the notion of the Hamiltonian in favour of the scattering operator. If Successful, it would have done away once and for all with any kind of inverse problem.

Solutions of the wave equation or Maxwell's equations in boundary value and free space problems are analyzed. Hyperbolic systems in domains going off to infinity are studied. New results on Maxwell's equations and non-star shaped reflecting bodies are included.

These proceedings contain lectures given at the N.A.T.O. Advanced Study Institute entitled "Scattering Theory in Mathematics and Physics" held in Denver, Colorado, June 11-29, 1973. We have assembled the main series of lectures and some presented by other participants that seemed naturally to complement them. Unfortunately the size of this volume does not allow for a full account of all the contributions made at the Conference; however, all present were pleased by the number and breadth of those topics covered in the informal afternoon sessions. The purpose of the meeting, as reflected in its title, was to examine the single topic of scattering theory in as many of its manifestations as possible, i.e. as a hub of concepts and techniques from both mathematics and physics. The format of all the topics presented here is mathematical. The physical content embraces classical and quantum mechanical scattering, N-body systems and quantum field theoretical models. Left out are such subjects as the so-called analytic S-matrix theory and phenomeno logical models for high energy scattering. We would like to thank the main lecturers for their excellent presentations and written summaries. They provided a focus for the exceptionally strong interaction among the participants and we hope that some of the coherence achieved is reflected in these published notes. We have made no attempt to unify notation.
