This fifth volume in the series of yearbooks by the Association of Mathematics Educators in Singapore entitled Nurturing Reflective Learners in Mathematics is unique in that it focuses on a single theme in mathematics education. Three broad themes, namely fundamentals, instructional tools, and approaches to teaching for nurturing reflective learners in mathematics classrooms, shape the ideas in these chapters. The aim of this book is to contribute towards literature in the field of mathematics education, specifically the development of 21st century competencies amongst learners of mathematics.The book comprising fourteen chapters, written by renowned researchers in mathematics education, provides readers with approaches and applicable classroom strategies to foster skills and dispositions that will enable learners to thrive in the fast-changing and complex world that we live in today.The chapters in the book can be classified into three broad themes. The first is an examination of what is meant by 21st century competencies and how they can be developed within the context of the mathematics curriculum. The second is an in-depth discussion of evidence-based practices aimed at fostering specific competencies like metacognition and reflective thinking, critical thinking and communication skills. The last and third theme is about teaching approaches that are likely to feature increasingly in the 21st century classroom, for example flipped learning or the use of comics and storytelling.

This book offers a counterpart to the extensive corpus of literature available on the same topic from a Western perspective. It showcases innovative approaches to professional development of mathematics teachers in Asian countries, and reports on both empirical and expository studies of teachers’ professional development in these counties. It provides scholars from non-English-speaking and under-represented Asian countries the opportunity to engage in discourse with other scholars in the field, and is the first book to present substantial contributions from scholars in Asia on the professional development of mathematics teachers in their respective countries. It includes perspectives that shed valuable light on how the approaches pursued in Asian countries resemble or differ from those in the West.

With this seventh volume, as part of the series of yearbooks by the Association of Mathematics Educators in Singapore, we aim to provide a range of learning experiences and teaching strategies that mathematics teachers can judiciously select and adapt in order to deliver effective lessons to their students at the primary to secondary level. Our ultimate goal is to develop successful problem solvers who are able to understand concepts, master fundamental skills, reason logically, apply mathematics, enjoy learning, and strategise their thinking. These qualities will prepare students for life-long learning and careers in the 21st century.The materials covered are derived from psychological theories, education praxis, research findings, and mathematics discourse, mediated by the author's professional experiences in mathematics education in four countries over the past four decades. They are organised into ten chapters aligned with the Singapore mathematics curriculum framework to help teachers and educators from Singapore and other countries deepen their understanding about the so-called 'Singapore Maths'.The book strikes a balance between mathematical rigour and pedagogical diversity, without rigid adherence to either. This is relevant to the current discussion about the relative roles of mathematics content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge in effective teaching. It also encourages teachers to develop their own philosophy and teaching styles so that their lessons are effective, efficient, and enjoyable to teach.

In the Spring of 1994 teacher-educators from representative institutions within the Christian College Coalition met to consider the question: Just what is it that Christian colleges of education should do in preparing teachers for the nation's schools? This well-constructed volume begins to answer that question.

This book serves to enliven three-way partnerships among parents, teachers, and students concerning mathematical learning in elementary and middle school settings. Key tenets of the principles concerning constructivism and overlapping spheres of influence are presented in the first two chapters to provide a solid theoretical basis for teaching mathematics the way we do and for involving parents in the learning process. The remaining chapters describe parental involvement initiatives that reflect a model consisting of an invitation, an initial meeting, an engagement workshop, home activities, a follow-up session, and additional tasks to maintain connections between the mathematics classroom and the home.
