BOOK EXCERPT:
Nutritional Pathophysiology of Obesity and Its Comorbidities: A Case-Study Approach challenges students and practitioners to understand the role of nutrients within the pathophysiology and development of disease, specifically those diseases which develop as a result of obesity. Through a case-based approach, the author presents complex clinical scenarios that require multiple treatment strategies, including targeted diet modification as an adjuvant to medical therapy. The book is divided into 9 modules and 5 appendices each of which covers aspects of obesity and its comorbidities. Within each module, a case is detailed with relevant history, laboratory and physical data, and follow-up information. Each case is followed by a resource section which delineates current understanding of the pathophysiology of the condition, as well as the actions of nutrients and food components shown to modify these processes. A "further readings" section cites current supporting clinical and basic literature as well as published guidelines. - Explores how obesity is a key player in the pathophysiology of many diseases, including diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, hypertension, and atherosclerosis - Integrates current understandings of the molecular mechanisms of nutrient action on the processes of disease development and treatment - Presents students and early practitioners with complex clinical scenarios through a practical case-based approach

BOOK EXCERPT:
NAFLD and NASH refer to the hepatic phenotype of metabolic syndromes strongly associated with obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. NAFLD and NASH have complex pathogenesis modulated not only by the liver but also by muscle, adipose tissue, pancreas, gut microbiome, and immune and central nervous systems. This complex pathology, coupled with insulin resistance, lipid and bile acid changes, and congenital genetic predisposition, induces liver injury due to oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and autophagy dysfunction. Additionally, NAFLD and NASH contribute to diseases such as cirrhosis, atherosclerosis, chronic kidney disease, lung disease, and cancer in various organs, leading to systemic multi-organ damage. Even though enthusiastic development of new drugs for NAFLD and NASH has been underway, we are still lacking progress in generating therapeutic agents based on multiorgan-related pathomechanisms. In this special issue, we welcome clinical and basic studies on extrahepatic lesions as well as new findings related to liver pathology in NAFLD and NASH. Topic Editors welcome manuscripts particularly focusing on new therapies and new signaling pathways on the multiorgan-linkage of NAFLD and NASH.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This unique 2-in-1 reference presents vital information on pathophysiology in two helpful ways on every page. The wide inner column contains detailed narrative text; the narrow outer column contains brief bulleted summaries of the same information. This format enables nurses to quickly scan the bulleted points and jump to in-depth information as needed without turning the page. Organized by body system, the book covers 220 diseases and disorders. Two 8-page full-color inserts illustrate selected disorders. Illustrations and flowcharts demonstrate abnormal structures and pathophysiologic processes. Icons highlight complications, life-threatening disorders, emergency interventions, and effects of treatment on disease processes.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book contains the reviews delivered at the Bayer Centenary Symposium held in Edinburg in May 1988. Experts in the field reported on recent developments in the pathophysiology and therapy of diabetes mellitus. Thus an up-to-date overview of diabetes mellitus research presented to a small group of specialists is now available to a broader community of endocrinologists, physicians and internists.

BOOK EXCERPT:
According to the World Health Organization, the epidemic of global obesity has nearly tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight, over 650 million of which were obese. Being overweight and obese has been linked to a number of non-communicable, chronic diseases. Pathophysiology of Obesity-Induced Health Complications is a compilation of review articles dedicated to describe co-morbidities associated with obesity. The wide range that is covered is of significant interest to basic research scientists, clinicians and graduate students who are engaged in studying obesity-induced health complications. Furthermore, this book highlights the potential of novel approaches for the prevention and treatment of obesity and its related illnesses. Nineteen articles in this book are organized in four sections that are designed to provide an overview of obesity-induced health complications. The first section serves as an introductory section on the prevalence, causes, consequences, treatments and preventive approaches for obesity. Section two covers the metabolic disturbances and inflammation due to obesity. The third section is focused on neurological and visceral complications as a consequence of obesity. The final section covers strategies for the prevention of obesity-induced complications. The book illustrates that obesity can result in a diverse range of pathophysiological conditions that adversely affect health.
