BOOK EXCERPT:
Did you know that Bach invested in mines? That Rossini improved his income by running casinos in the opera houses which on weekends performed his operas? Or that Puccini composed shorter arias to make them fit the length of gramophone disks as they reported him huge revenues? Or who was, in financial terms, the most successful classical composer in history? This book —the first of its kind— studies and compares the finances of twenty classical composers in their historical and economical context. Each chapter details and quantifies the sources of income of these musicians (wages, royalties, subsidies, percentages over the number of performances, arrangements, investments in the musical sector, etc), thus allowing to estimate the income they obtained due to their artistic — primarily compositional, but also related— activities. In addition, it also estimates the composer’s expenditures, thus drawing a relatively complete image of their personal finances. This not only allows to conclude to create a ranking of composers according to their economic success, but —more importantly— for the first time gives an accurate image of the financial situation of a broad set of composers. This allows to correct many false believes while also giving new insights on the relation between economics and music history.

Music, Movies, Meanings, and Markets: Cinemajazzamatazz focuses on (macro)marketing-related aspects of film music in general and on the cinemusical role of jazz in particular. After a review of other work on music in motion pictures, the book explores and illustrates the ways in which on-screen jazz performances contribute to the development of dramatic meanings in various films, many of which address the art-versus-commerce theme as a central concern.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A leader’s provocative look at 20th century financial markets Henry Kaufman, former vice Chairman of Salomon Brothers, was a key Wall Street figure in the 70s and 80s. His projections about interest rates, bond performance, unemployment, and government debt impacted monetary policy in more than one presidential administration, and prompted swings in the markets. You’ll find On Money and Markets—Dr. Kaufman’s look back at the financial and economic arenas he helped shape for half a century—both fascinating and valuable. His memoir gives you insight into such questions as why the Federal Reserve has gained so much power, and what it means for investors....and what patterns we can see in the credit crunches and other financial crises that have rocked Wall Street and world markets. The dozen or so questions he explores are of serious concern to today’s investors. And few other experts have Dr. Kaufman’s perspective and experience to answer them.

BOOK EXCERPT:
After losing much of his money when the South Sea Bubble burst in 1720, English physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton stated, "I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people." Even though Isaac Newton was a brilliant man, he did not realize that markets function in a way that is opposite to almost everything else we do. For example, if people are lining up around the block to purchase an iPad, it is a sign that it is a good product. If people are lining up around the block to buy a condominium, it is a bad sign for real estate. Markets do not always act in a rational or logical manner. Mind, Money & Markets explains why they act the way they do. It is critical for every person to understand this in order to make wise decisions ranging from buying a home to operating a business. Expert advice is much less reliable than we expect it to be because no one can accurately predict the future on a consistent basis. Gigantic losses like the $6.2 billion trading loss at JP Morgan in 2012 show that investors are not giving momentum (following the trend) the respect it deserves. Mind, Money & Markets offers a momentum filter-specifically, a screening tool from which every individual and professional investor should benefit. The book also provides a "circuit breaker" that enables investors to limit losses in case of an unexpected event in financial markets. Using powerful and poignant analogies from their life experiences, including Dave Harder's twelve years as a Search and Rescue volunteer, we provide readers with a simple discipline to preserve precious hard-earned capital during severe downturns and to outperform benchmarks when markets are in an uptrend. It is easier to know what to do than to actually do it. Psychiatrist Dr. Janice Dorn specializes in helping traders and investors deal with emotions and aspects of human nature that hinder them from making astute investment decisions for stocks, bonds, real estate, currencies, or commodities. We have passed on many words of wisdom collected from market sages and great thinkers. We also highlight some major misconceptions about investing, and show the reader how to overcome them and prosper. With a compelling mixture of fascinating stories and more than 100 colored charts and photographs, this is truly a unique work about how human beings react to markets. The book helps individual as well as professional investors to be efficient with their time and energy by teaching them to focus only on a few factors which have the most significant impact on financial markets. The personalized strategies provided in these pages will enable readers to maximize gains, minimize losses, and have more time to spend on things that matter the most in their lives.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A human economy puts people first in emergent world society. Money is a human universal and now takes the divisive form of capitalism. This book addresses how to think about money (from Aristotle to the daily news and the sexual economy of luxury goods); its contemporary evolution (banking the unbanked and remittances in the South, cross-border investment in China, the payments industry and the politics of bitcoin); and cases from 19th century India and Southern Africa to contemporary Haiti and Argentina. Money is one idea with diverse forms. As national monopoly currencies give way to regional and global federalism, money is a key to achieving economic democracy.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Cold War was fought between “state socialism” and “the free market.” That fluctuating relationship between public power and private money continues today, unfolding in new and unforeseen ways during the economic crisis. Nine case studies -- from Southern Africa, South Asia, Brazil, and Atlantic Africa – examine economic life from the perspective of ordinary people in places that are normally marginal to global discourse, covering a range of class positions from the bottom to the top of society. The authors of these case studies examine people’s concrete economic activities and aspirations. By looking at how people insert themselves into the actual, unequal economy, they seek to reflect human unity and diversity more fully than the narrow vision of conventional economics.
