Open Source Archaeology: Ethics and Practice' brings together authors and researchers in the field of open-source archaeology, defined as encompassing the ethical imperative for open public access to the results of publicly-funded research; practical solutions to open-data projects; open-source software applications in archaeology; public information sharing projects in archaeology; open-GIS; and the open-context system of data management and sharing. This edited volume is designed to discuss important issues around open access to data and software in academic and commercial archaeology, as well as to summarise both the current state of theoretical engagement, and technological development in the field of open-archaeology. Ben Edwards Ben Edwards was trained in archaeology at the University of Durham, achieving his BA, MA and PhD. His first commercial work was for Archaeological Services, Durham University, before moving on to become a Lecturer in Archaeological Practice at the University of Liverpool, where he taught for three years. During this time Ben began his project management work, undertaking both commercial and research excavations, and survey projects. His teaching (archaeological practice and heritage management) proved to be an excellent basis from which to develop his professional expertise. Ben now lectures at Manchester Metropolitan University in Archaeology and Heritage. He currently researches open source software and hardware for use in the field, and advanced 3D surveying techniques. Andrew Wilson Andrew Wilson was trained in archaeology at the University of Liverpool. Upon achieving his BA at the University, Andrew moved south to study Computer Applied Archaeology at the University of Southampton, where he was awarded an MSc. Andrew returned to the University of Liverpool where he has recently completed a PhD. During this time Andrew coordinated a number of projects both in the UK and Middle East, specialising in advanced surveying techniques of archaeological remains. Working in the the School of Computer Science, Bangor University Andrew has developed his keen interest in Open data policies and ethics. This interest was the starting point for this volume.

The illicit antiquities market is fueled by a well-documented rise in looting at archaeological sites and a fear that the proceeds of such looting may be financing terrorism or rogue states. In this report, the authors compile evidence from numerous open sources to outline the major policy-relevant characteristics of that market and to propose the way forward for developing policies intended to disrupt illicit networks.

This book discusses the cultural, social and archaeological aspects of space and the impact of spatial concepts in practical archaeological case studies. It summarizes recent developments and looks to the future, exploring some of the cutting-edge ideas in spatial method and theory. The past decade has seen significant advances in the tools available for spatial analysis in archaeology, and theory and method regarding the spatial character of archaeology must keep pace with these advances. Geomorphological and geochemical techniques, geographic information systems, remotely sensed data, virtual reality and electronic survey technology provide new opportunities, but also require new ideas. This book gives us insight into the ways that people have used space to subsist, to recreate their culture in their ‘homelands’ or in new areas, or impose their culture on others. Contributors address the way archaeological notions of space and deep time can add to society’s understanding of landscape, social relationships, past environment and cultural heritage. The contributions from Europe and North America demonstrate intercontinental connections and explore ways of using dynamic models of spatial patterning to assess human activity within natural and cultural landscapes.

Every part of archaeological practice is intimately tied to digital technologies, but how deeply do we really understand the ways these technologies impact the theoretical trends in archaeology, how these trends affect the adoption of these technologies, or how the use of technology alters our interactions with the human past? This volume suggests a critical approach to archaeology in a digital world, a purposeful and systematic application of digital tools in archaeology. This is a call to pay attention to your digital tools, to be explicit about how you are using them, and to understand how they work and impact your own practice. The chapters in this volume demonstrate how this critical, reflexive approach to archaeology in the digital age can be accomplished, touching on topics that include 3D data, predictive and procedural modelling, digital publishing, digital archiving, public and community engagement, ethics, and global sustainability. The scale and scope of this research demonstrates how necessary it is for all archaeological practitioners to approach this digital age with a critical perspective and to be purposeful in our use of digital technologies.

This volume of original chapters written by experts in the field offers a snapshot of how historical built spaces, past cultural landscapes, and archaeological distributions are currently being explored through computational social science. It focuses on the continuing importance of spatial and spatio-temporal pattern recognition in the archaeological record, considers more wholly model-based approaches that fix ideas and build theory, and addresses those applications where situated human experience and perception are a core interest. Reflecting the changes in computational technology over the past decade, the authors bring in examples from historic and prehistoric sites in Europe, Asia, and the Americas to demonstrate the variety of applications available to the contemporary researcher.

Exploring the use of digital methods in heritage studies and archaeological research The two volumes of Digital Heritage and Archaeology in Practice bring together archaeologists and heritage professionals from private, public, and academic sectors to discuss practical applications of digital and computational approaches to the field. Contributors thoughtfully explore the diverse and exciting ways in which digital methods are being deployed in archaeological interpretation and analysis, museum collections and archives, and community engagement, as well as the unique challenges that these approaches bring. Il volume 30 di «Archeologia e Calcolatori» si apre con un inserto speciale, dedicato al trentennale della rivista. Alle introduzioni di F. Djindjian e di P. Moscati, che delineano un quadro dell’informatica archeologica nel suo divenire, seguono gli articoli dei membri del Comitato di Redazione, a testimoniare l’attività di ricerca e di sperimentazione che ha caratterizzato il cammino editoriale della rivista, e il contributo di una giovane laureata dell’Università Bocconi, che ha lavorato a stretto contatto con il team di «Archeologia e Calcolatori». Nella parte centrale sono pubblicati gli articoli proposti annualmente dagli autori. Ne emerge un quadro che rappresenta gli aspetti applicativi più qualificanti dell’informatica archeologica (le banche dati, i GIS, le analisi statistiche, i sistemi multimediali), ma che guarda oggi con sempre maggiore interesse agli strumenti di visualizzazione scientifica e di comunicazione delle conoscenze. Il volume si chiude con gli Atti del XII Workshop ArcheoFOSS (Free, Libre and Open Source Software e Open Format nei processi di ricerca archeologica), un’iniziativa lodevole, nata nel 2006, cui si è più volte dato spazio nelle pagine della rivista.

Il numero 34.1, 2022 della rivista Archeologia e Calcolatori è caratterizzato dalla pubblicazione degli Atti di due Convegni internazionali. Il primo riguarda la sedicesima edizione del Convegno ArcheoFOSS, dal titolo “Open Software, Hardware, Processes, Data and Formats in Archaeological Research”, svoltosi a Roma il 22-23 settembre 2022 presso la sede del Digilab della Sapienza Università di Roma. Gli Atti, curati da Julian Bogdani e Stefano Costa, comprendono 21 articoli che ben testimoniano il successo e la vitalità dell’iniziativa, nata nel 2006, cui si è più volte dato spazio nelle pagine della rivista. La seconda parte del volume, che raccoglie 14 contributi, è stata curata da Carlo Citter e Agostino Sotgia ed è dedicata agli Atti della Sessione speciale “Modelling the Landscape. From Prediction to Postdiction” della settima edizione della Landscape Archaeology Conference (Iași, Romania 10-15 September 2022). Si tratta di un tema dedicato all’uso dei modelli per lo studio dei paesaggi antichi, considerato sia attraverso l’approccio predittivo “tradizionale”, perché in uso dagli anni Novanta, sia attraverso quello postdittivo, che i curatori definiscono più “sperimentale”.
