This book brings together a group of scholars from around the world who view psychology as the science of human ways of being. Being refers to the process of existing - through construction of the human world – here, rather than to an ontological state. This collection includes work that has the goal to establish the newly developed area of cultural psychology as the science of specifically human ways of existence. It comes as a next step after the “behaviorist turn” that has dominated psychology over most of the 20th century, and like its successor in the form of “cognitivism”, kept psychology away from addressing issues of specifically human ways of relating with their worlds. Such linking takes place through intentional human actions: through the creation of complex tools for living, entertainment, and work. Human beings construct tools to make other tools. Human beings invent religious systems, notions of economic rationality and legal systems; they enter into aesthetic enjoyment of various aspects of life in art, music, and literature; they have the capability of inventing national identities that can be summoned to legitimate one’s killing of one’s neighbors or being killed oneself. Hegel's philosophy of religion is a philosophical theology in which God is conceived as a movement of inclusive divine subjectivity - ultimately God inclusive of the world. For Hegel, this inclusive divine subjectivity took the form of a movement of conceptual thought. In an effort to work with Hegel while going beyond him, Experience and Spirit presents God as a movement of inclusive divine subjectivity; however, that movement is understood to be not one of thought but of enriching experience and, thus, of spirit. This argument in favor of a renewed understanding of Hegel's true infinite proceeds in three major steps: first, a consideration of Hegel's own problematic proposal; second, the elaboration of a fuller and more contemporary notion of experience; and, third, three constructive phenomenological and philosophical reflections on basic questions in philosophical theology, namely, the experience of God, speaking about God, and the notions of evil, freedom, and mystery. Landmark study of Hegel’s arguments for God as Trinity.

Since Hegel, philosophers have declared repeatedly that metaphysics is at an end, a pronouncement that has sparked much contemporary philosophical debate. What exactly does the end, or closure, of metaphysics mean, and what are the implications of this view? John Sallis characterizes the end of metaphysics as a limit, or horizon, both enclosing metaphysical thought and opening the field of thinking beyond it. He elaborates five areas in which the boundaries of thinking are extended: imagination as an opening power, the radicalizing of phenomenology's injunction to attend to the things themselves, Heidegger's shift of thinking toward an opening or clearing, archaic closure through a return to Plato and Heraclitus, and the nonidentity that takes place in the act of delimitation. This last question is developed in relation to Husserl's project of a pure phenomenology, to the debate between hermeneutics and deconstruction, and to the secluding of ground announced in Schelling's thought.
