BOOK EXCERPT:
Sophie Nelson is entering the second phase of her life. Long since divorced, she has been on her own for longer than she was ever married; her children are all grown, and shes tired of the corporate rat race. Sophie decides to retire to a small, cozy town in Vermont to pursue her real passion: writing. There, she finds a happy home where she can live alone, surrounded by her work and her words. But things soon take a mysterious turn. One night, she comes home to find a light on in her safe sanctuary. There has been an intruder in her house, and Sophie is reminded that single life for a woman is not always safe. Local authorities tell her not to worry, but the murder of her neighbor soon follows the intrusion. The small town, so lacking in crime, is thrown into turmoil. Meanwhile, Sophie meets Sam Wood, and in spite of the tragedy the two are drawn to each other. Sophie is hesitant to start a romantic relationship, though, what with a murderer roaming the streets. The people of town cannot possibly foresee their villain is someone they know quite well, and Sophie may have to give up a little of her independence to allow herself to be savedbefore she becomes the next victim.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Through the pages of Environmental History Review, now Environmental History, an entire discipline has been created and defined over time through the publication of the finest scholarship by humanists, social and natural scientists, and other professionals concerned with the complex relationship between people and our global environment. Out of the Woods gathers together the best of this scholarship.Covering a broad array of topics and reflecting the continuing diversity within the field of environmental history, Out of the Woods begins with three theoretical pieces by William Cronon, Carolyn Merchant, and Donald Worster probing the assumptions that underlie the words and ideas historians use to analyze human interaction with the physical world. One of these - the concept of place - is the subject of a second group of essays. The political context is picked up in the third section, followed by a selection of some of the journal's most recent contributions discussing the intersection between urban and environmental history. Water's role in defining the contours of the human and natural landscape is undeniable and forms the focus of the fifth section. Finally, the global character of environmental issues emerges in three compelling articles by Alfred Crosby, Thomas Dunlap, and Stephen Pyne.Of interest to a wide range of scholars in environmental history, law, and politics, Out of the Woods is intended as a reader for course use and a benchmark for the field of environmental history as it continues to develop into the next century.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Juniper Sawfeather seems to have a talent for finding mythological creatures. Or maybe the creatures are finding her. The mermaids she saved from the oil spill are long gone. There's no evidence of them, and she's been branded as a liar and a fake in the media and at school. Her environmental activist parents have moved on to a protest to save Old Growth trees from being chopped down. June isn't particularly concerned with this cause until after falling asleep at the base of a giant tree she wakes to find herself 40 feet in the air on one of its branches! From this point on she becomes obsessed with the tree, and it appears the tree is becoming obsessed with her too. Soon, she is trapped 170 feet above the ground, and the magical spirit that resides in the tree isn't interested in letting her go free or allowing anyone else to save her. Is the tree spirit good or evil? Will Juniper's feet ever touch the ground again?
