Overcoming Workplace Pathologies

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book deals directly with the characteristics of the relationships that the leader builds in the context of the work environment. It argues that the prevailing work community work culture is intended to help the leader lead but, increasingly it impedes the leader’s work. Leadership is a function of the leader’s values, attitudes, and aspirations: leadership flows from the leader’s spiritual character-defining core essence. However, the author argues that cultural forces coming from both inside and outside the workplace, often designed to promote diversity, inclusivity, and tolerance, have introduced into the work culture values and behavior that are pathological to executing effective leadership and detrimental to the health of work communities. While attractive on the surface, these new values are toxic to the idea of relationship and thus threaten the work community culture, in effect "killing leadership." This book will arm leaders with the tools, resources, and techniques to recognize and overcome workplace pathologies. After reading this book, leaders will: have a complete understanding of the key principles of spirit-based values leadership see clearly that the leader’s values shape both the leader’s one-on-one relationships with coworkers and are at the center of the work culture they create to re-enforce coworker actions and decisions appreciate more fully the power of the ambient work culture to influence coworkers toward leader set values and methods guiding the work community know the toxic effect on doing leadership of introducing non-work values and standards into the work community culture understand the arguments against allowing subgroups of the work community to form and practice values opposed to the values the leader has set for the full group be better prepared to deal with the consequences of encountering evil, hatred and/or fear in the workplace realize that not all coworkers are uniformly honest and truthful and learn ways to counter this behavior and still accomplish the work community’s goals and ensure its productivity The result is a pragmatic approach to aligning values, behaviors, and performance, while enhancing the principles of effective and positive leadership throughout the organization.

How To Overcome Work Stress An Office Survival Guide

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

We all, more or less, suffer from stress. We stress with family, with girlfriends, with friends. We stress when something is wrong, in any area of our lives. But there comes a point when this malaise begins to show itself prominently. To ruin our days, our relationships, our productivity. Stress, we can say it, is the real and insidious disease of modern life. Think about it for a little while: What is your main cause of tension? What makes you nervous, irritable and, to some extent, even sad? What makes you ineffective in relationships? What would you give to feel at least a little bit better? Everyone has their own paturnias, everyone has their own daily challenges to face. This book is about how to deal with stress but in a very specific area, namely the work environment. We spend a third of our lives in a place where we have to produce, be on a computer, relate to other people. How can we even remotely underestimate the importance of the quality of time we spend at work? While stress is part of any work-related problem, it can be really detrimental as well as crippling. Long story short: a little stress is good. But don’t overdo it, don’t break the string. Never! When you are overstretched, not only do you become a magnet for all kinds of ailments possible and imaginable, but you also begin to exhibit a degree of inefficiency. And that’s not good. Neither for you nor for your team. This happens because when you’re physically and emotionally imbalanced, your ability to cope with everyday situations becomes less polished (and your resistance to illnesses lowers as well, did you know?). With this book you’ll get all the information you need to better manage all that tension you accumulate every day in the workplace and, to some extent, it can make your life a little less hard. As we’ll see later, you’ll need to learn how to organize your days, but more importantly, how to handle relationships with a new spirit. This text is dedicated to all those who are experiencing a frustrating situation related to the world of business and relationships with colleagues, with the hope of being able to bring a pinch of serenity and lightness in your lives.
