BOOK EXCERPT:
This book provides an introduction to the field of Penning traps and related experimental techniques. It serves both as a primer for those entering the field, and as a quick reference for those working in it. The book is motivated by the observation that often a vast number of different resources have to be explored to gain a good overview of Penning trap principles. This is especially true for students who experience additional difficulty due to the different styles of presentation and notation. This volume provides a broad introductory overview in unified notation.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Non-Neutral Plasmas 2006. The Workshop focused on fundamental questions regarding confinement and dynamics of one-component plasmas as well as the relevance of these subjects to other related topics in physics, such as antimatter research, accelerator physics, atomic physics, and dusty plasmas.

BOOK EXCERPT:
We performed experiments that explore the effects of a quadrupole magnetic field on a pure electron plasma confined in a Malmberg-Penning trap. This work is important both as an example of resonant particle transport and for antihydrogen (H-bar)). The H-bar experiments plan to use magnetic quadrupole neutral atom traps to confine H-bar atoms created in double-well positron/antiproton Malmberg-Penning traps. Our results show that a quadrupole field of only 0.020 G/cm can cause significant transport when applied to a 1 cm radius plasma confined by an axial field of 100 G. Our model describes the shape of the plasma and shows that resonant electrons follow trajectories that take them on large radial excursions, leading to enhanced transport. If the electrons are off resonance, then diffusion will not be greatly enhanced. The measured diffusion scales like the square of the quadrupole field strength, inversely like the square of the axial magnetic field and. below resonance, like the square of the E x B rotation frequency. The location of the resonance in parameter space scales accordingly as we vary the length and temperature of the plasma. However, the temperature used in fitting the data differs from the independently measured temperature by a factor of four, suggesting that our description of the effect as purely diffusive is not correct.

BOOK EXCERPT:
These papers were peer reviewed before publication. This conference covers the use of particle accelerators in research and industry. The research applications include basic atomic and nuclear physics studies with ion beams of energies less than 10 million volts. The applications include the use of ion beams for the analysis of materials. In the proceedings, experiments are outlined for Rutherford Backscattering analysis, particle induced x-ray emission, nuclear reaction analysis and neutron activation analysis. There are also sessions devoted to accelerator technology and the development of new spectrometers and detectors. The meeting also covers radiation processing with electron beams. These topics include cross-linking, sterilization of medical disposables and food preservation by radiation. The conference also includes a medical symposium on the production and use of medical radioisotopes and a symposium on ion implantation primarily for the semiconductor industry.
