BOOK EXCERPT:
Pastoral care provision in schools has become increasingly marginalized in recent years. However, emphasis on the needs of the "whole learner" has become ever greater. Coupled with this is a growing recognition of theadverse effects of a wider social malaise on the development of students. This book stresses the need for a radical rethink and reprioritizing of pastoral support. It promotes the belief that pastoral care can contribute to and improve academic achievement, and analyzes every aspect of pastoral care and PSE.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Create the Pastoral Care Center that your flock needs! Contract Pastoral Care and Education: The Trend of the Future? provides clergy of all faiths and pastoral care students with insight into the shifting role of chaplains in today's health care environment and explains why many of these positions are disappearing. Examining alternatives to working at hospitals and health care agencies, such as establishing independent contract centers that are commissioned by health care organizations, this book examines the many questions that chaplains are more frequently asking about the stability of their profession. Comprehensive and current, Contract Pastoral Care and Education offers suggestions and models to help you plan your own pastoral care center and continue serving individuals with spiritual care. This honest and informative book contains discussions with chaplains and educators about nine of these care centers in operation, as well as the responses of five chaplains who offer compliments and constructive criticism of these organizations. Exploring the reasons for the decrease in opportunities for pastoral caregivers, such as the decrease of rural populations and the increase of community-based services, Contract Pastoral Care and Education provides you with tips and suggestions that other centers use in order to be effective and successful, including: raising funds from the community, state, and government for operational fees appointing internal, structure-diversified board members who serve without compensation and officers and memberships with specific terms and functions responding to the growing numbers of patients by training lay persons under clinical supervision generating support groups consisting of patients and family members from multiple bereavement groups or organizations to offer comfort and care to others Full of insight and immediately useful techniques, Contract Pastoral Care and Education will help you keep serving patients and assist you in pursuing a growing facet of the pastoral care field.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Drawing on psychological, theological, and cultural studies on suffering, Carrie Doehring encourages counselors to view their ministry through trifocal lenses and include approaches that are premodern (apprehending God through religious rituals), modern (consulting rational and empirical sources), and postmodern (acknowledging the contextual nature of knowledge). Utilizing strategies from all three perspectives, Doehring describes the basic ingredients of a caregiving relationship, shows how to use the caregiver's life experience as a source of authority, and demonstrates how to develop the skill of listening and establish the actual relationship. She then explains the steps of psychological assessment, systemic assessment, and theological reflection, and finally she delineates the basic steps for plans of care: attending to the careseeker's safety, building trust, mourning losses, and reconnecting with the ordinariness of life.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A history of pastoral care is a history of the Christian church in action. But if any sense is to be made of the centuries of Christian work and effort, not only the practicalities of making the message of the Gospel a reality on earth, but also the ideas which have shaped the attempt, century by century, must be examined. This is the history of 2000 years of thought and practice in Christian pastoral ministry. Until comparatively late in that story the bulk of the formative thinking took place in the Middle East and in Europe and this forms the background for recent developments in understanding human nature, and the ways in which that understanding has influenced our thinking in pastoral care.Subjects covered range from the Biblical foundations to the sects and new religious movements; from the Fathers, the monks, the Friars, the Templars to the changes at the end of the twentieth century.

BOOK EXCERPT:
When the organization and structure of the church in America was altered in the early 1900s to meet modern demands, the role of the pastorate became more specialized to adapt to the burdens of the new, "efficient" structure. In 1920, Gaines Dobbins utilized the business efficiency model at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary to formulate a distinct ecclesiology. Discontent with traditional methods of instruction in theological education, Dobbins sought to implement theories and methodologies from modern educationalists. He adopted a psychologized educational methodology and utilized the psychology of religion as an empirical measure of the soul, human nature, and human behavior. Use of the social sciences seemed to grant Dobbins, as a practitioner, academic respectability within the realm of theological education. Both the professionalization that resulted from Dobbins's efficiency standards, and a working theory of human nature derived from psychological models, were synthesized into a specialized system of pastoral care. Dobbins followed the new shape of pastoral theology in America, adopting Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) as the model for pastoral training. As a result, CPE became an integral part of the curriculum at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary for over sixty years, and spread to influence many other SBC entities.

BOOK EXCERPT:
People from various walks of life will accept the call to pastor a church without any idea about how to be a pastor, the responsibilities of a pastor, and what to do with the vision that God has given them for the church. In his book, the author, who has served as a pastor for over 22 years, provides a Biblical perspective of what the pastor needs to know and the price that must be paid when accepting the call to lead God's people. Several critical areas of pastorship are addressed, including the price of pastoring; the price of pastoring those with whom we disagree, the price of pastoring the brokenhearted; the price of pastoring those who are stumbling blocks and hindrances to the forward moving of the ministry; the privileges and rewards of pastoring; what to do with the vision that God has given for the church; and extending the vision to the community. This is a timely and valuable resource and should be a part of every pastor's and pastoral student's library. Rev. Dr. Sinclair L. Thorne has served as the pastor of First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Hinesville, Georgia for over 22 years. He is a graduate of ITC Theological Seminary Extension Course, Morehouse School of Religion, and has a Master of Divinity and a Doctorate of Religion in Pastoral Care from the New Life Bible Community School of Ministry and Bible Institute of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He retired from the U.S. Army as First Sergeant of Charlie Company, 24th Support Battalion in 1992, after returning from the Gulf War. He is the former President of the Ministerial Alliance of Liberty County, Dean and Assistant Program Coordinator for the Tattnall Baptist Association, and President of the First District of the Georgia Missionary Baptist Convention.
