There are four core themes developed in this book which deal with critical issues, models, theories and frameworks. These expound understandings of patient centred care and the processes, practices and behaviours supporting its attainment: conceptions and cultures of patient-centred care, coordination, communication, innovation.

This book explores how person-centred health care could be refined to help persons alleviate pain-related distress and construct pain as a potentially positive experience. Osler, "It is much more important to know what sort of a patient has a disease than what sort of a disease a patient has." It is estimated that at least 60% of persons dying have a prolonged advanced illness. The need for palliative and end-of-life care will increase due to the rapidly aging world population and the increase of multiple long-term conditions. For these reasons, palliative care is an integral part of public health and public health strategies. Palliative care as holistic person-centered care and has played a critical role in the recent public health emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a close association between public health, health promotion, and palliative care, and this research topic will highlight this association. Through a series of multi-disciplinary articles, we will explore public health in the context of life-limiting illnesses contributing to shaping person-centered care, including palliative, end-of-life, and rehabilitation. This research topic will discuss advanced and life-limiting illness as a public health challenge and explore the role of palliative and end-of-life care including rehabilitation in shaping person-centered care.

Inappropriate health care is an escalating and expensive problem. It affects high income, middle income, and low income countries and wastes billions of dollars annually as well as harming individuals and communities. Inappropriate care refers to both the overuse and underuse of tests and treatments and, ironically, can occur concurrently within the same health system. Even though patient-centred care is still the prevailing ethos, specifying where patients should be situated geographically has not required health professionals to consider the preferences, values, and priorities of patients when making treatment decisions. Patient-perspective care demands that the decisions health professionals make are in the service of patient’s goals. Health care, ultimately, is helping individuals to live the lives they would wish for themselves. In order to meet this imperative, health professionals must work towards understanding what their patients would like to achieve through their engagement with health services. This book details the extent and scope of inappropriate care and how we have arrived in this position. The necessity for patient-perspective care is outlined and provides a theoretical framework that explains why patient-perspective care is so critical. The implications of this theory are then explored and specific strategies for moving towards a patient-perspective approach are discussed. This book is entirely original and describes a novel, fresh approach to delivering health services. Many long-standing and expensive problems such as missed appointments will disappear and patients will be more satisfied with the treatments they receive. This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2014. Susan Sontag claimed that ‘everyone who is born holds dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well, and the kingdom of the sick,’ and while ‘we all prefer to use only the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place.’ We are all, in other words, past, present, or future patients. This collection examines the many ways in which the idea of the patient can be conceptualized in different cultural, professional, intellectual, and emotional contexts as part of an on-going, multidisciplinary and international attempt by scholars, health care professionals, and, indeed, patients themselves to rethink and re-examine patienthood and patient care. These chapters attempt to put the patient at the centre: not just (although clearly not least) at the centre of the processes, institutions, and ideologies of medical care, but of a wide range of intellectual and social practices.
