This book is the outcome of the successful NATO Advanced Study Institute on Pattern Recognition Theory and Applications, held at St. Anne's College, Oxford, in April 1981., The aim of the meeting was to review the recent advances in the theory of pattern recognition and to assess its current and future practical potential. The theme of the Institute - the decision making aspects of pattern recognition with the emphasis on the novel hybrid approaches - and its scope - a high level tutorial coverage of pattern recognition methodologies counterpointed with contrib uted papers on advanced theoretical topics and applications - are faithfully reflected by the volume. The material is divided into five sections: 1. Methodology 2. Image Understanding and Interpretation 3. Medical Applications 4. Speech Processing and Other Applications 5. Panel Discussions. The first section covers a broad spectrum of pattern recognition methodologies, including geometric, statistical, fuzzy set, syntactic, graph-theoretic and hybrid approaches. Its cove,r age of hybrid methods places the volume in a unique position among existing books on pattern recognition. The second section provides an extensive treatment of the topical problem of image understanding from both the artificial intelligence and pattern recognition points of view. The two application sections demonstrate the usefulness of the novel methodologies in traditional pattern 'recognition application areas. They address the problems of hardware/software implementation and of algorithm robustness, flexibility and general reliability. The final section reports on a panel discussion held during the Institute.

This book is currently the only one on this subject containing both introductory material and advanced recent research results. It presents, at one end, fundamental concepts and notations developed in syntactic and structural pattern recognition and at the other, reports on the current state of the art with respect to both methodology and applications. In particular, it includes artificial intelligence related techniques, which are likely to become very important in future pattern recognition.The book consists of individual chapters written by different authors. The chapters are grouped into broader subject areas like “Syntactic Representation and Parsing”, “Structural Representation and Matching”, “Learning”, etc. Each chapter is a self-contained presentation of one particular topic. In order to keep the original flavor of each contribution, no efforts were undertaken to unify the different chapters with respect to notation. Naturally, the self-containedness of the individual chapters results in some redundancy. However, we believe that this handicap is compensated by the fact that each contribution can be read individually without prior study of the preceding chapters. A unification of the spectrum of material covered by the individual chapters is provided by the subject and author index included at the end of the book.

The book provides a comprehensive view of pattern recognition concepts and methods, illustrated with real-life applications in several areas. A CD-ROM offered with the book includes datasets and software tools, making it easier to follow in a hands-on fashion, right from the start.

Dynamic Fuzzy Pattern Recognition with Applications to Finance and Engineering focuses on fuzzy clustering methods which have proven to be very powerful in pattern recognition and considers the entire process of dynamic pattern recognition. This book sets a general framework for Dynamic Pattern Recognition, describing in detail the monitoring process using fuzzy tools and the adaptation process in which the classifiers have to be adapted, using the observations of the dynamic process. It then focuses on the problem of a changing cluster structure (new clusters, merging of clusters, splitting of clusters and the detection of gradual changes in the cluster structure). Finally, the book integrates these parts into a complete algorithm for dynamic fuzzy classifier design and classification.

This book is the outcome of a NATO Advanced Study Institute on Pattern Recog nition Theory and Applications held in Spa-Balmoral, Belgium, in June 1986. This Institute was the third of a series which started in 1975 in Bandol, France, at the initia tive of Professors K. S. Fu and A. Whinston, and continued in 1981 in Oxford, UK, with Professors K. S. Fu, J. Kittler and L. -F. Pau as directors. As early as in 1981, plans were made to pursue the series in about 1986 and possibly in Belgium, with Professor K. S. Fu and the present editors as directors. Unfortunately, Ie sort en decida autrement: Professor Fu passed away in the spring of 1985. His sudden death was an irreparable loss to the scientific community and to all those who knew him as an inspiring colleague, a teacher or a dear friend. Soon after, Josef Kittler and I decided to pay a small tribute to his memory by helping some of his plans to materialize. With the support of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, the Institute became a reality. It was therefore but natural that the proceedings of the Institute be dedicated to him. The book contains most of the papers that were presented at the Institute. Papers are grouped along major themes which hopefully represent the major areas of contem porary research. These are: 1. Statistical methods and clustering techniques 2. Probabilistic relaxation techniques 3. From Markovian to connectionist models 4.

This monograph is intended to cover several major applications of pattern recognition. After a brief introduction to pattern recognition in Chapter 1, the two major approaches, statistical approach and syntactic approach, are reviewed in Chapter 2, and 3, respectively. Other topics include the application of pattern recognition to seismic wave interpretation, to system reliability problems, to medical data analysis, as well as character and speech recognition.

This slim volume was the first presentation of Clarke’s theory. A limited number of paperbacks are still available. Published in June 2008, An Oultine was produced to offer people who study and work in related fields an overview of the fundamentals of Pattern Recognition Theory and its implications for understanding the role of humour in human cognitive development. Its publication generated worldwide media coverage and discussion.

This book describes the latest advances in fuzzy logic, neural networks and optimization algorithms, as well as their hybrid combinations, and their applications in areas such as: intelligent control and robotics, pattern recognition, medical diagnosis, time series prediction, and optimization of complex problems. The book is divided into five main parts. The first part proposes new concepts and algorithms based on type-1 and type-2 fuzzy logic and their applications; the second explores new concepts and algorithms in neural networks and fuzzy logic applied to recognition. The third part examines the theory and practice of meta-heuristics in various areas of application, while the fourth highlights diverse applications of fuzzy logic, neural networks and hybrid intelligent systems in medical contexts. Finally, the fifth part focuses on applications of fuzzy logic, neural networks and meta-heuristics to robotics problems.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Structural and Syntactical Pattern Recognition, SSPR '96, held in Leipzig, Germany in August 1996. The 36 revised full papers included together with three invited papers were carefully selected from a total of 52 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on grammars and languages; morphology and mathematical approaches to pattern recognition; semantic nets, relational models and graph-based methods; 2D and 3D shape recognition; document image analysis and recognition; and handwritten and printed character recognition.
