This book is based on the proceedings of the National Security Seminar 2011 conducted at the USI from 17 to 18 Nov 2011. The views of eminent speakers from across the globe have been covered on the following themes:- • Strategic and Security Environment in the Asia Pacific Region • Existing Political and Economic Frameworks in the Asia Pacific: Have they fulfilled regional aspirations? • Bringing an Enduring Security Architecture for the Asia Pacific This book intends to examine the current state and possible future trajectory of efforts to create an Asia Pacific security architecture. The problems are challenging but not insurmountable. Efforts to build an appropriate security architecture would certainly be in the interest of the region.

This volume brings together international experts to provide fresh perspectives on geopolitical concerns in the South China Sea. The book considers the interests and security strategies of each of the nations with a claim to ownership and jurisdiction in the Sea. Examining contexts including the region’s natural resources and China’s behaviour, the book also assesses the motivations and approaches of other states in Asia and further afield. This is an accessible, even-handed and comprehensive examination of current and future rivalries and challenges in one of the most strategically important and militarized maritime regions of the world.

Both the European Union and Japan have been major beneficiaries and supporters of the liberal international order, first led by the United States since the end of World War II. During this period, they have emerged as global powers, however, the very order that nurtured their rise is now facing twin threats. First, through authoritarian China’s promotion of alternative models of global governance, and second from a crisis of liberalism, manifested in the policies of President Donald Trump and Brexit. This book explores these challenges faced by both the EU and Japan, providing a multidisciplinary approach to studying the relationship between the two. It analyses their cooperation in terms of security, defence and trade and examines how their shared normative values are ultimately implemented. Having recently concluded an Economic Partnership Agreement and with a Strategic Partnership Agreement in the pipeline, this book asks whether they can convert their latent and modest cooperation into an alternative form of leadership and an antidote to the illiberal tide sweeping the developed world? ASEAN has produced a plan of action on ASEAN Economic Integration, which is annexed to the Bali Concord II. To kick-start the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), the plan of action provides numerous policy recommendations to be implemented over the next 1 to 2 years. At the track-two level, research institutes/think-tanks such as ASEAN-ISIS, ISEAS and CSIS (Jakarta) have contributed concept papers on the AEC and the ASEAN Security Community (ASC).Against this backdrop, the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) organized the ASEAN Community Roundtable in Singapore from 4 to 5 June 2004. The main theme of the Roundtable was entitled "e;Towards Realizing an ASEAN Community"e;.This Roundtable provided the opportunity for scholars and experts on ASEAN to "e;brain-storm"e; in a more comprehensive and integrated manner, the different ideas and proposals underpinning the process of community building that ASEAN is embarking upon. This report reflects the conclusions that emerged from the ASEAN Community Roundtable.

The Asia Pacific region is a dynamic but complex area where much of the history of the 21st Century will be scripted. Although the strategic and economic importance of the region continues to grow, challenges of reconciling national interests with regional and global interests continue. Security architectures during the Cold War were based primarily on military alliances. However the need today is to base these architectures on shared values, interests and challenges. We need not only define but believe in these universal values. This book brings out this important aspect of this region and explains them briefly.

No naval command has done more than the Seventh Fleet to defend and promote American interests in Asia.  This book is the first volume of the international relations series "Peace, Security and the World" scheduled to be published before 2025, following the complete works of the "Christianity and the World" series published by the author in 2022.These two series of complete works are a summary of the author's decades of research on international relations. World War III, or WWIII, is the name given to a hypothetical large-scale third World military conflict after World War I and II. Since at least 1941, the expression has been used. Some apply it loosely to limited or minor conflicts, such as the War on Terror or the Cold War. Conversely, others assume that such a conflict would surpass previous world wars in scale and destructive impact. Because of the development of nuclear weapons by the Manhattan Project, which was used in the atomic bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima toward the end of World War II, and several nations’ subsequent acquisition and deployment of them, the risk of a nuclear apocalypse decimating civilization and life on earth is a recurring theme in World War III speculation. Another important fear is that biological warfare might lead to many victims. It can occur purposefully or inadvertently, such as the unintended release of a biological agent, an unforeseen mutation of an agent, or its adaption to other species after usage. These large-scale cataclysmic occurrences, produced by sophisticated destruction technologies, can leave the earth’s surface uninhabitable. The years 1914–1918 of World War I was regarded as “the war to end [all] wars” before World War II in 1939. World War I was commonly referred to as “The Great War” during the interwar period. It was widely believed that a global conflict of this magnitude would never happen again. The outbreak of World War II dashed hopes that humanity had “outgrown” the need for full-scale world wars. In 1945, the Cold War began, and with the spread of nuclear weapons technology in the Soviet Union, the possibility of a Third World conflict became more plausible. During the Cold War years, military and civil authorities in many countries anticipated and planned for the possibility of a Third World War. Scenarios included everything from conventional combat to limited or catastrophic nuclear war. Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) was devised during the Cold War, according to which an all-out nuclear war would destroy all nations involved. The possibility of eradicating humanity may have contributed to American and Soviet leaders’ ability to avoid such a scenario. The most recent major international military conflict, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has been noted as a potential flashpoint or catalyst for a third world war.
