This book applies econometric techniques to test the relationship between efficiency and risk within the banking industry in China. Chapters examine how efficiency has been affected by different types of risk-taking behaviour and how risk has been an important determinant of bank efficiency in the context of the series of reforms impacting banks in China since 1978. The author begins by unpacking these reforms and proceeds to explain relevant theories of efficiency and bank risk before reviewing empirical literature in evaluating risk and efficiency in the banking industry. He then investigates the issues of efficiency and risk in the Chinese banking industry using a number of modern econometric techniques. The final chapters present the results of original empirical research conducted by the author, and provide valuable implications to Chinese government as well as banking regulatory authorities to make relevant policies.

This book systematically discusses the contribution of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to China’s transition from an emerging to an advanced economic and financial system after more than five years. From a historical perspective, it explains to what extent the BRI plan is effective enough to help China bounce back from its economic slowdown and the financial implications in a policy trilemma context. Further, it investigates both the rationale of the BRI and its pitfalls, focusing on the various options for financing the project based on the Mundell & Fleming model. The book also analyses the impact of the BRI as well as possible policy options to deal with China’s policy trilemma in a structurally more balanced “new normal” economic growth model. Lastly, it reviews the financial stability issues concerning liberalization policies in China.

This is an open access book. It has been our great honor to welcome all the participants to the 4th Asia-Pacific Management Research Conference was held in Surabaya, Indonesia, on May 18th–20th, 2022 as a hybrid conference (virtualy conference). I recalled formulating the concept and conducting this conference with the Research Center and Case Clearing House (RC-CCH) Team back in 2017. The conference encourages fresh and impactful studies that address the latest issues and topics, particularly in economics, management, business, and accounting. The forum particularly welcomes the discussion and sharing among research fellows in a semi-formal academic setting. As we reach the fourth conference, we are confident that we will maintain a contribution to the global literature. It is undeniable that the theme of the COVID-19 Pandemic is the main issue of this fourth conference, but rather than focusing on the misery, we look for models, technologies, and concepts that are beneficial for the economy and businesses to grow toward the new normal. This conference received 136 abstracts, of which 57 were accepted articles in Atlantis Proceeding.

This book provides an overview of the historical financial reforms and regulatory changes in China, highlighting the background to and causes of changes in the income structure of China's banks. It also investigates ongoing concerns with regard to banking diversification in China, and its consequences, amid the global trend of banks’ shift to non-traditional businesses. Focusing on three critical aspects of bank-income diversification, namely the effects on profitability, risk level, and efficiency, it employs the concept of systemically important banks, which describes the scale and degree of influence a bank has in global and domestic financial markets. More importantly, rather than replicating techniques employed in the research on developed markets, it applies several improved methodologies to address bank diversification in the specific context created by China’s unique institutional background and data characteristics, such as GMM-type threshold models and stochastic frontier analysis with the within maximum likelihood estimation. Shedding new light on the current status of income diversification in the Chinese banking sector, this book is a valuable resource for readers in fields such as banking and financial stability. It will also help banking professionals and financial regulatory authorities to better understand the reform of China's financial industry and the future direction of banking.

Primary agricultural cooperatives in Malawi, in contrast to other farmer-level organizations, have legal status and can own assets, borrow money for their operations, and sign contracts, making it easier for them to do business for the profit of their members. Conceptually, such cooperatives enable their member-farmers to achieve economies of scale for their commercial activities. By joining together in a cooperative, members can obtain commercial inputs at lower prices closer to wholesale prices than if they purchased the inputs as individuals. In selling their output, by aggregating their crops and other products into larger lots that the cooperative then negotiates to sell on their behalf, buyers can achieve greater efficiency in buying from them and can be expected to offer a premium over the prices that they would offer farmers selling those products individually. Cooperatives can also serve farmers in providing an important channel for obtaining information and advice to increase their productivity and the profitability of their farming. Moreover, by joining together to achieve common objectives in primary agricultural cooperatives, member-farmers can exercise greater influence on local and national policy issues of concern to them, while also building social cohesion, solidarity, and trust within their communities.

Much of Guyana's 20th century history was defined by the PNC dictatorship and the political and economic wreckage it left behind. In "Guyana's Great Economic Downswing, 1977 to 1990", Dr Ramesh Gampat presents a comprehensive study of these specific years when the national economy contracted by 2.7 percent annually. He explores the multiple facets of the country's political tribalism which "does not value freedom, liberty and the flourishing of all people; it values only freedom, liberty and flourishing of tribes." This book is a wide-ranging and timely overview of the contemporary Chinese banking system. It charts the vast changes in Chinese banking from before China’s admission to the WTO in 2001 to more recent regulatory reform and developments in the shadow banking sector. The book begins with an economic history of the mono-banking system, and a critical discussion of reforms taken by the government in preparation for China’s entry to the WTO. The second part of the book discusses banking regulation and government policy during and after the global financial crisis in 2008-2009 and their impact on banking, including recent developments. Finally, the book concludes an empirical analysis of the impact of banking reforms on a number of important issues, including bank efficiency, capital structure, competition and financial stability, and risk taking behaviour, and a review of the relevance of shadow banking and internet banking.
