Perspectives On Gratitude

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Psychologists, philosophers, theologians and educationalists have all lately explored various conceptual, moral, psychological and pedagogical dimensions of gratitude in a rapidly expanding academic and popular literature. However, while the distinguished contributors to this work hail from these distinct disciplines, they have been brought together in this volume precisely in recognition of the need for a more interdisciplinary perspective on the topic. While further developing such more familiar debates in the field as whether it is appropriate to feel grateful in circumstances in which there is no obvious benefactor, whether it is proper to feel grateful to those who have benefited one only from a sense of duty and whether it makes sense to be grateful if so doing colludes with injustice, the essays in this collection explore a wide variety of fresh conceptual, psychological and moral issues. For example, in addition to identifying some new moral paradoxes about gratitude and seeking a generally more morally discriminating approach to gratitude education, relations are explored between gratitude and humility, forgiveness and appreciation and the religious and spiritual dimensions of the concept are also given much overdue attention. By drawing together serious academic engagement with the study of gratitude and a serious attempt to undertake this within an interdisciplinary perspective, Perspectives on Gratitude will be of value to academics and graduate students in the fields of philosophy, psychology and theology, as well as other research-based disciplines.

Philosophical Perspectives On Existential Gratitude

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Existential gratitude-gratitude for one's very existence or life as a whole-is pervasive across the most influential human, cultural and religious traditions. Weaving together analytic and continental, as well as non-western and historical philosophical perspectives, this volume explores the nexus of gratitude, existence and God as an inter-subjective phenomenon for the first time. A team of leading scholars introduce existential gratitude as a perennially and characteristically human phenomenon, central to the distinctive life of our species. Attention is given to the conditions under which existence itself might be construed as having a gift-like or otherwise gratitude-inducing character. Drawing on a diversity of perspectives, chapters mark out new territory in philosophical inquiry, addressing whether and in what sense we ought to be grateful for our very existence. By analysing gratitude, this collection makes a novel contribution to the discourse on moral emotions, phenomenology, anti-natalism and theology.

The Psychology Of Gratitude

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Gratitude, like other positive emotions, has inspired many theological and philosophical writings, but it has inspired very little vigorous, empirical research. In an effort to remedy this oversight, this volume brings together prominent scientists from various disciplines to examine what has become known as the most-neglected emotion. The volume begins with the historical, philosophical, and theoretical foundations of gratitude, then presents the current research perspectives from social, personality, and developmental psychology, as well as from primatology, anthropology, and biology. The volume also includes a comprehensive, annotated bibliography of research on gratitude. This work contributes a great deal to the growing positive psychology initiative and to the scientific investigation of positive human emotions. It will be an invaluable resource for researchers and students in social, personality, and developmental, clinical, and health psychology, as well as to sociologists and cultural anthropologists.

Psychological Support By Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Lissencephaly

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book, Psychological Support by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Lissencephaly, was born out of the need to address the complex emotional and psychological challenges faced by individuals and families affected by lissencephaly, a rare but profoundly impactful neurological condition. Lissencephaly, characterized by an absence of normal brain folds, often brings a unique array of physical, developmental, and emotional challenges. These challenges extend beyond the individual, affecting families, caregivers, and even communities. This book aims to provide a comprehensive guide to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and its application for supporting mental health and resilience within this context. Each section has been crafted with a dual purpose: to offer a thorough understanding of the biological, genetic, and psychological aspects of lissencephaly and to introduce actionable, evidence-based CBT strategies tailored to the specific needs arising from this condition. This book explores essential foundations, from understanding genetic and epigenetic influences to practical therapeutic approaches, coping mechanisms, and tools for pain management. Given the chronic and often unpredictable nature of lissencephaly, mental health support becomes critical. While we often address physical symptoms and medical treatments, emotional health, too, requires a compassionate, structured approach. CBT offers a powerful method for navigating the internal and external realities faced by those affected. It enables individuals to confront negative thinking patterns, build resilience, and find meaning even amid difficult circumstances. Whether you are a healthcare professional, caregiver, family member, or individual seeking understanding, it is my hope that this book provides practical and compassionate insights. As you turn these pages, may you find tools that empower, strategies that support healing, and encouragement to foster resilience. Together, we can create a support system that helps individuals affected by lissencephaly lead lives filled with hope, strength, and dignity.

Mindfulness Acceptance And Positive Psychology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Many have wondered if there is a key ingredient to living a full and happy life. For decades now, scientists and psychologists alike have been studying the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to thrive. The positive psychology movement was founded on the belief that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play. At the same time, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)—a mindfulness-based, values-oriented behavioral therapy that has many parallels to Buddhism, yet is not religious in any way—has been focused on helping people achieve their greatest human potential. Created only years apart, ACT and positive psychology both promote human flourishing, and they often share overlapping themes and applications, particularly when it comes to setting goals, psychological strengths, mindfulness, and the clarification of what matters most—our values and our search for meaning in life. Despite these similarities, however, the two different therapeutic models are rarely discussed in relation to one another. What if unifying these theories could lead to faster, more profound and enduring improvements to the human condition? Edited by leading researchers in the field of positive psychology, Mindfulness, Acceptance, and Positive Psychology is the first professional book to successfully integrate key elements of ACT and positive psychology to promote healthy functioning in clients. By gaining an understanding of "the seven foundations of well-being," professionals will walk away with concrete, modernized strategies to use when working with clients. Throughout the book, the editors focus on how ACT, mindfulness therapies, and positive psychology can best be utilized by professionals in various settings, from prisons and Fortune 500 business organizations to parents and schools. With contributions by Steven C. Hayes, the founder of ACT, as well as other well-known authorities on ACT and positive psychology such as Robyn Walser, Kristin Neff, Dennis Tirch, Ian Stewart, Louise McHugh, Lance M. McCracken, Acacia Parks, Robert Biswas-Diener, and more, this book provides state-of-the-art research, theory, and applications of relevance to mental health professionals, scientists, advanced students, and people in the general public interested in either ACT or positive psychology.
