BOOK EXCERPT:

The book is intended for chemists entering medicinal chemistry research who have no knowledge of pharmacology. Pharmacological principles and concepts are emphasized, rather than a survey of large numbers of specific drugs. It is intended to serve as a tool to prepare the reader for further in-depth study in many areas of pharmacology.

From Physick To Pharmacology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

From Physick to Pharmacology addresses the important, albeit neglected history of the distribution and sale of medicinal drugs in England from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century. The social history of early medicine and the evolution of British retailing are two areas that have attracted considerable attention from academics in recent years. That said, little work has been done either by medical or business historians on the actual retailing of drugs. This book merges the two themes by examining the growth in the retailing of medicinal drugs since late-medieval times. The six academics contributing essays include both medical and business historians who provide an informed and stimulating perspective on the subject. After an introduction setting out the context of drug retailing and surveying the current literature, the volume is arranged in a broadly chronological order, beginning with Patrick Wallis's study of apothecaries and other medical retailers in early modern London. The next chapter, by Louise Hill Curth, looks at the way the distribution network expanded to encompass a range of other retail outlets to sell new, branded, pre-packaged proprietary drugs. Steven King then examines various other ways in which medicines were sold in the eighteenth century, with a focus on itinerant traders. This is followed by pieces from Hilary Marland on the rise of chemists and druggists in the nineteenth century, and Stuart Anderson on twentieth-century community pharmacists. The final essay, by Judy Slinn, examines the marketing and consumption of prescription drugs from the middle of that century until the present day. Taken together, these essays provide a fascinating insight into the changes and continuities of five centuries of drug retailing in England.

Chemistry Biology And Pharmacology Of Lichen

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Understand the properties and applications of one of the world’s most ubiquitous flora Lichen is a single entity comprising two or more organisms—most typically algae and fungus—in a symbiotic relationship. It is one of the planet’s most abundant categories of flora, with over 25,000 known species across all regions of the globe. Lichens’ status as a rich source of bioactive metabolites and phytochemicals, as well as their potential as bio-indicators, has given them an increasingly prominent role in modern research into medicine, cosmetics, food, and more. Chemistry, Biology and Pharmacology of Lichen provides a comprehensive overview of these bountiful flora and their properties. It provides not only in-depth analysis of lichen physiology and ecology, but also a thorough survey of their modern and growing applications. It provides all the tools readers need to domesticate lichen and bring their properties to bear on some of humanity’s most intractable scientific problems. Chemistry, Biology and Pharmacology of Lichen readers will also find: Applications of lichen in fields ranging from food to cosmetics to nanoscience and beyond Detailed discussion of topics including lichen as habitats for other organisms, lichens as anticancer drugs, antimicrobial properties of lichen, and many more Detailed discussion on key bioactive compounds from lichens Chemistry, Biology and Pharmacology of Lichen is ideal for scientists and researchers in ethnobotany, pharmacology, chemistry, and biology, as well as teachers and students with an interest in biologically important lichens.

Pharmacology For Chemists

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Assuming little previous knowledge of biology, this book aids graduate chemists to close the gap in their knowledge of pharmacology and make the link between medicinal chemistry and the way in which drugs act on the body. The availability of receptor structures has revolutionized drug discovery and development necessitating an up-to-date source of information for chemists entering this new pharmacological world. Chapters, written by experts with an appreciation of most graduate chemists’ knowledge, explain the history of pharmacology, the relationship between receptor structure and function and receptor pharmacology relevant to drug design. Importantly, as drugs are normally discovered in test rather than therapeutic systems, this text describes how pharmacology provides methods to characterize drug activity through scales that allow prediction of drug effect in all systems. Moreover, it outlines the relationship between drug distribution in the body and the action of drugs in particular organ systems relevant to disease. Readers will also find information on pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism, safety pharmacology and toxicology, clinical and regulatory pharmacology and the use of imaging techniques. Carefully edited for relevance to the modern chemist, this unique textbook will be an essential resource for chemists planning to work in drug discovery, or postgraduate students and practicing chemists interested in expanding their pharmacology knowledge

Chemistry Biological And Pharmacological Properties Of Medicinal Plants From The Americas

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume is a compilation of plenary lectures presented at the IOCD/CYTED Symposium held in Panama City, Panama in 1997, and covers different aspects of research into plants from North, South and Central America. The topics treated all revolve around the chemistry, pharmacology, and biology of these plants. The importance of pharmaceuticals derived from plant sources is described, together with the potential of ethnomedicine for providing new leads in the search for bioactive constituents. The biodiversity of the Americas is underlined and an idea is given of the urgency with which the flora must be studied.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Information about drugs, side effects and abuse. Drug prescription, medication and therapy. online stores to buy drugs. Testing, interaction, administration and treatments for the health care. Medicine is the branch of health science and the sector of public life concerned with maintaining or restoring human health through the study, diagnosis, treatment and possible prevention of disease and injury. It is both an area of knowledge – a science of body systems, their diseases and treatment – and the applied practice of that knowledge. A drug is any biological substance, synthetic or non-synthetic, that is taken for non-dietary needs. It is usually synthesized outside of an organism, but introduced into an organism to produce its action. That is, when taken into the organisms body, it will produce some effects or alter some bodily functions (such as relieving symptoms, curing diseases or used as preventive medicine or any other purposes).
