To trace the effects of cultural eutrophication, one meter sediment cores were used to determine the history of calcareous and noncalcareous Wisconsin lakes. Cores were analyzed for carbon, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium, aluminum, iron, and manganese. Determinations of organic nitrogen, exchangeable ammonium and acid soluble phosphorus were made on selected sedimentary profiles. Recent sedimentation rates and identification of pre- and postcultural sediments were determined by ragweed pollen. Enrichment of phosphorus in postcultural Lake Mendota, Wisconsin, sediments are the effect of increased phosphorus supply from domestic sewage. Chemical stratigraphy of concentration-depth diagrams permit a qualitative evaluation of cultural activities. Potentialities and limitations of using recent lake sediments to evaluate eutrophication are discussed.

This Workshop was organized to assess the status of knowledge on the behaviour of phosphorus in sediments and to define gaps and reassess research strategies, particularly with respect to prevalent methodology and future approach; and to define gaps and reassess research strategies for water management measures in aquatic ecosystems, especially in relation to the release of phosphorus from the sediments and its impact on the functioning of the whole system.

This book aims to structure, in a complete and sequential way, the mainstream technical knowledge which is related to eutrophication control. The book considers the development of innovative technologies for phosphate removal, while supporting the restoration of currently degraded lakes and reservoir systems. In addition, this book contains key-aspects of future benchmark interests being specially framed under the ongoing development of a circular economy. In particular, the book will contribute to a better understanding of the problem of internal P-loads and P-sources disposition towards a more effective control of nutrients’ enrichment in lakes. The chemical routes and environmental fate of such lake nutrients will be viewed in the light of innovative technologies (engineering dimensions) and circular economy perspectives (economics dimensions). The main theme extends to an economic appreciation of environmental polluted aquifers. The book will appeal to an interdisciplinary audience, covering a wide spectrum of scientific fields, such as environment, physical chemistry, surface chemistry, interfacial phenomena, coastal engineering, bio-engineering, environmental policy makers, and economists.

This volume comprises the proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Shallow Lakes, held at Dalfsen, The Netherlands, in June 2005. The theme of the symposium was Shallow Lakes in a Changing World, and it dealt with water-quality issues, such as changes in lake limnology, especially those driven by eutrophication and pollution, increased nutrient loading and productivity, perennial blooms of cyanobacteria and loss of biodiversity.
