Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a non-invasive optical technique widely used in the study and monitoring of the pulsations associated with changes in blood volume in a peripheral vascular bed. Over the last thirty years, there has been a significant increase in the number of published articles on PPG, describing both basic and applied research. Throughout these publications the PPG has been hailed as a non-invasive, low cost, and simple optical measurement technique applied at the surface of the skin to measure a whole host of physiological parameters.

In an era where ensuring security is of utmost importance, biometric identification emerges as a fundamental aspect, capitalizing on unique biological signals that are impossible to replicate. This groundbreaking study introduces an innovative approach to authentication by harnessing photoplethysmographic (PPG) signals, which are renowned for their accessibility and cost-effectiveness. Delve into a realm where optical sensors extract PPG signals, unveiling their potential as inherently distinctive biometric traits. By drawing insights from biometric datasets of 40 subjects, this book meticulously demonstrates the effectiveness of PPG signals under controlled conditions. The management of diseases of the venous system has evolved rapidly over the last forty years. Much of this development occured since the creation of the Union Internationale de Phlebologie (UIP) in 1959 which has helped to bring together those involved in the management of venous diseases.
