BOOK EXCERPT:
Johan August Strindberg was a Swedish playwright, novelist, poet, essayist and painter. A prolific writer who often drew directly on his personal experience, Strindberg's career spanned four decades, during which time he wrote over sixty plays and more than thirty works of fiction, autobiography, history, cultural analysis, and politics. A bold experimenter and iconoclast throughout, he explored a wide range of dramatic methods and purposes, from naturalistic tragedy, monodrama, and history plays, to his anticipations of expressionist and surrealist dramatic techniques. From his earliest work, Strindberg developed innovative forms of dramatic action, language, and visual composition. He is considered the "father" of modern Swedish literature and his The Red Room has frequently been described as the first modern Swedish novel. This work contains: A CHRONOLOGICAL LIST OF AUGUST STRINDBERG'S MAIN WORKS THE DREAM PLAY THE LINK THE DANCE of DEATH, PART I THE DANCE of DEATH, PART II

BOOK EXCERPT:
August Strindberg is considered the father of modern Swedish literature. Here are collected three of his finest plays, written during what he called his 'Inferno period', a period just following a series of psychotic episodes, they are full of wild imagery, intense and powerful characters and touch on realism and naturalism in a groundbreaking way for the time. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Hesperides Press are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

BOOK EXCERPT:
DH Lawrence's first play, 'The Widowing of Mrs. Holroyd' follows the unhappy marriage of Mrs. Holroyd to her abusive, alcoholic, adulterous husband. The romantic advances of her neighbour cause her to yearn for her husband's death, and when a mining accident grants this wish, she is faced with the task of washing and laying his body for the funeral. This exploration of the failing of marriages and human relationships is characteristic of Lawrence's uncompromising rawness and had a successful film adaption starring Colin Firth in 1995. DH Lawrence (1885-1930) was an English poet and novelist. Famed for his lyrical prose, he was uncompromising in his mission to uncover the consequences of modernity and industrialization, particularly on sexuality, instinct, and spontaneity. His works, although innovative, were not truly appreciated until after his death, the most notable of which 'Lady Chatterly's Lover' was adapted to screen in 1981.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Routledge Performance Practitioners is a series of introductory guides to the key theatre-makers of the last century. Each volume explains the background to and the work of one of the major influences on twentieth- and twenty-first-century performance. Antonin Artaud was an active theatre-maker and theorist whose ideas reshaped contemporary approaches to performance. This is the first book to combine an overview of Artaud’s life with a focus on his work as an actor and director; an analysis of his key theories, including the Theatre of Cruelty and the double; a consideration of his work as a director at the Théâtre Alfred Jarry and his production of Strindberg’s A Dream Play; and a series of practical exercises to develop an approach to theatre based on Artaud’s key ideas. As a first step towards critical understanding and as an initial exploration before going on to further, primary research, Routledge Performance Practitioners are unbeatable value for today’s student.
