Human interaction with the environment remains one of the most pervasive facets of modern society. In a world characterized by rapid population growth, unprecedented global trade and digital communications, energy security, natural resource scarcities, climatic changes and environmental quality, emerging diseases and public health, biodiversity and habitat modifications are routinely touted by the popular press as they canvas global political agendas and scholarly endeavors.

The study of pharmaceuticals in the enviornment is a relatively new area of research, which has really only taken off in recent years. Since the first edition of this book was printed, many papers on the subject have been published. It is exceedingly difficult for those who are not actively involved in the field, to establish trends and developments. The book provides the beginner with a well-founded overview, but it is also of high value for specialists. Following the resounding success of the first edition, the new edition of the book has been updated and greatly extended. The number of contributions has grown in line with the latest developments worldwide. In the waste water treatment process in sewage treatment plants, sewage sludge is produced as a by-product. The sludge contains nitrogen and phosphorus that originate from the waste water. In addition to these nutrients, sludge also contains micronutrients and organic matter. Many of these substances are required for the production of food and they can be recycled by using sludge as a fertiliser on farm lands. Phosphorus is the nutrient that is of primary interest at present. This is due to the fact that phosphorus is a finite resource that is mined and has various levels of unwanted impurities. In the foreseeable future, there will be a shortage of phosphorus ore with low levels of impurities. Ores with higher levels of impurities may also be used in the production of mineral fertilisers in the future, but it may require that energy demanding cleaning techniques are used. Such a scenario will lead to higher market prices for phosphorus fertilisers, which may have social consequences on a global scale. It is therefore crucial that the available phosphorus is used efficiently, from an economic, environmental and social perspective.

Resorcinol is a white crystalline compound which is soluble in water and has a low vapour pressure. It is mostly used in the rubber industry, as well as for high-quality wood bonding applications and in the manufacture of dyestuffs, pharmaceuticals, flame retardants, agricultural chemicals, fungicidal creams and lotions, and hair dye formulations. It is released into the environment from a number of anthropogenic sources including production, processing and consumer uses, especially from hair dyes and pharmaceuticals, and localised high concentrations can appear in coal conversion wastewater or wastewater in regions with oil shale mining.

This work is devoted to the study of the endocrine-related effects on human health with special reference to carcinogenesis, and to the assessment of carcinogenic risk. After providing basic information at the general, cellular and molecular levels, the contents focus on the paradigm of biologically-based risk assessment, as developed form physiologically-based toxicokinetic models. The analysis of this material is proposed as the novel parameters for developing biologically-based models of carcinogenesis, considered to be more relevant to risk assessment than traditional approaches.

Contamination of the aquatic environment by antifouling compounds has been a topic of increasing importance during the last few years. This book describes advances in antifouling paint biocides, and provides thorough evaluation of research and information on occurrence and levels, environmental fate, analytical techniques and methods for the monitoring and control, environmental modeling, ecotoxicological effects and risk assessment placing emphasis on the knowledge acquired over the last decade.

Environmental decisions must satisfy a multitude of objectives and the matching of a plan, policy or project to such objectives is a matter of both facts and value judgements. Value Functions for Environmental Management provides a systematic approach to the structuring and measurement of value judgements, showing how they drive the decision process and how to make them transparent and effective in support of complex decisions. The value functions that the book describes provide a scheme for the exploration of human values and a tool for transforming them into an analytical model.
