Point Processes For Reliability Analysis

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Focusing on the theory and applications of point processes, Point Processes for Reliability Analysis naturally combines classical results on the basic and advanced properties of point processes with recent theoretical findings of the authors. It also presents numerous examples that illustrate how general results and approaches are applied to stochastic description of repairable systems and systems operating in a random environment modelled by shock processes. The real life objects are operating in a changing, random environment. One of the ways to model an impact of this environment is via the external shocks occurring in accordance with some stochastic point processes. The Poisson (homogeneous and nonhomogeneous) process, the renewal process and their generalizations are considered as models for external shocks affecting an operating system. At the same time these processes model the consecutive failure/repair times of repairable engineering systems. Perfect, minimal and intermediate (imperfect) repairs are discussed in this respect. Covering material previously available only in the journal literature, Point Processes for Reliability Analysis provides a survey of recent developments in this area which will be invaluable to researchers and advanced students in reliability engineering and applied mathematics.

Quality And Reliability Of Technical Systems

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

High reliability, maintainability, and safety are expected from complex equipment and systems. To build these characteristics into an item, failure rate and failure mode analyses have to be performed early in the design phase, starting at the com ponent level, and have to be supported by a set of design guidelines for reliability and maintainability as well as by extensive design reviews. Before production, qualification tests of prototypes must ensure that quality and reliability targets have been reached. In the production phase, processes and procedures have to be selec ted and monitored to assure the required quality level. For many systems, availabi lity requirements must also be satisfied. In these cases, stochastic processes can be used to investigate and optimize availability, including logistical support. This book presents the state of the art of the methods and procedures necessary for a cost and time effective quality and reliability assurance during the design and production of equipment and systems. It takes into consideration that: 1. Quality and reliability assurance of complex equipment and systems requires that all engineers involved in a project undertake a set of specific activities from the definition to the operating phase, which are performed concurrently to achieve the best performance, quality, and reliability for given cost and time schedule targets.

Multi State System Reliability Assessment Optimization And Applications

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Most books on reliability theory are devoted to traditional binary reliability models allowing for only two possible states for a system and its components: perfect functionality and complete failure. However, many real-world systems are composed of multi-state components, which have different performance levels and several failure modes with various effects on the entire system performance (degradation). Such systems are called Multi-State Systems (MSS). The examples of MSS are power systems where the component performance is characterized by the generating capacity, computer systems where the component performance is characterized by the data processing speed, communication systems, etc. This book is the first to be devoted to Multi-State System (MSS) reliability analysis and optimization. It provides a historical overview of the field, presents basic concepts of MSS, defines MSS reliability measures, and systematically describes the tools for MSS reliability assessment and optimization. Basic methods for MSS reliability assessment, such as a Boolean methods extension, basic random process methods (both Markov and semi-Markov) and universal generating function models, are systematically studied. A universal genetic algorithm optimization technique and all details of its application are described. All the methods are illustrated by numerical examples. The book also contains many examples of application of reliability assessment and optimization methods to real engineering problems. The aim of this book is to give a comprehensive, up-to-date presentation of MSS reliability theory based on modern advances in this field and provide a theoretical summary and examples of engineering applications to a variety of technical problems. From this point of view the book bridges the gap between theoretical advances and practical reliability engineering.
