This book illustrates how religion and ideology were used by Robert Mugabe to ward off opposition within his own party, in Zimbabwe and from the West. An interdisciplinary line up of contributors argue that Mugabe used a calculated narrative of deification – presenting himself as a divine figure who had the task of delivering land, freedom and confidence to black people across the world – to remain in power in Zimbabwe. The chapters highlight the appropriation and deployment of religious themes in Mugabe’s domestic and international politics, reflect on the contestation around the deification of Mugabe in Zimbabwean politics across different forms of religious expression, including African Traditional Religions and various strands of Christianity and initiate further reflections on the interface between religion and politics in Africa and globally. Religious Leaders and the Regime in the Second Republic of Zimbabwe looks at the nexus of religion and politics in Zimbabwe. This book's central theme is about the ideological struggle within the Church between 1959 and 1979 under the impact of African nationalism. It documents the critical role of the Rhodesian Justice and Peace Commission, and describes the relationships among missionaries, guerrillas and African political leaders and the accompanying propaganda battle.

Issues of same-sex relationships and gay and lesbian rights are the subject of public and political controversy in many African societies today. Frequently, these controversies receive widespread attention both locally and globally, such as with the Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Uganda. In the international media, these cases tend to be presented as revealing a deeply-rooted homophobia in Africa fuelled by religious and cultural traditions. But so far little energy is expended in understanding these controversies in all their complexity and the critical role religion plays in them. This is the first book with multidisciplinary perspectives on religion and homosexuality in Africa. It presents case studies from across the continent, from Egypt to Zimbabwe and from Senegal to Kenya, and covers religious traditions such as Islam, Christianity and Rastafarianism. The contributors explore the role of religion in the politicisation of homosexuality, investigate local and global mobilisations of power, critically examine dominant religious discourses, and highlight the emergence of counter-discourses. Hence they reveal the crucial yet ambivalent public role of religion in matters of sexuality, social justice and human rights in contemporary Africa.

This book is empirically grounded on Zimbabwe and looks at hate speech as a bad omen for any society, family, nation and organisation. Hate speech divides and kills any peace, unity, tolerance, inclusivity, philosophy, race and geographical area, sacred places of worship, freedoms, identities, culture, unity and development in any space. It is not a good recipe for both animate and inanimate. It is never a solution to be applied in any geographical location. Hate speech, conflict and violence usually go together. The book clearly shows that, hate speech must never be tolerated in any religion, space (both private and public spaces), scriptures, society and nation. It is poisonous and manifests in different forms such as language (verbal or electronic), discriminations, beliefs, practices, laws, censorship, graffiti and even physical assault.
