Pioneers In Polymer Science

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Because of a lack of appreciation for his efforts in developing modern polymer science, the contributions of Hermann Staudinger were disregarded for decades. There have also been delays in recognizing the contributions of other pioneers in polymer science. Hence, it is gratifying to note that Professor Seymour chaired an American Chemical Society Symposium focusing on the contributions of these pioneers and that Kluwer Academic Publishers has published the proceedings of this important symposium. H.Mark v DEDICATION This book on Pioneers in Polymer Science is dedicated to Nobel Laureate Polymer Scientists Hermann Staudinger, Emil Fischer, Herman Mark, Paul J. Flory, Linus Pauling, Carl S. Marvel, M. Polanyi, Giulio Natta, Karl Ziegler, and Bruce Merrifield as well as to those pioneers such as J.C. Patrick, Robert Thomas, William Sparks, Maurice Huggins, Qtto Bayer, Leo Baekeland, Anselm Payer, Roger Boyer, Waldo Semon, Robert Banks, J.P. Hogan, and other pioneers who, to a large degree, were responsible for the development of the world's second largest industry. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The editor appreciates the contribution of co-authors Herman Mark, C.H. Fisher, and G. Alan Stahl who co chaired the Symposium on Pioneers in Polymer Science at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society at Seattle, WA in 1984 and who contributed a chapter in this book. The editor is particularly grateful to Mischa Thomas who typed this manuscript.

Pioneers In Plastic Surgery

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book is a collection of short accounts of the lives and works of surgeons who began to use techniques in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that were to form the basis of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery and give rise to the specialty of plastic surgery. Descriptions of the intricate and novel surgical operations undertaken by these pioneers are included, but the emphasis is above all on stories of widely varying and fascinating characters, from the strange or eccentric, such as Hippolyte Morestin, to the serious or ambitious and a few, such as the Dutchman Johannes Esser and the legendary Sir Howard Gillies, who were accomplished in other fields, including business, sport and art. It is related how the two World Wars played a key role in the development of new techniques and how the endeavors of the pioneers were sometimes rejected by obstructive or abusive colleagues, impacting on careers and reputations. Pioneers in Plastic Surgery will appeal to all with an interest in the history of the discipline and the figures who shaped its birth and growth.

The American Synthetic Rubber Research Program

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This history of the government-funded synthetic rubber research program (1942-1956) offers a rare analysis of a cooperative research program geared to the improvement of existing products and the creation of new ones. The founders of the program believed the best way to further research in the new field was through collaboration among corporations, universities, and the federal government. Morris concludes that, in fact, the effort was ultimately a failure and that vigorous competition proves the best way to stimulate innovation. Government programs, like the rubber research program, are far better at improving existing products, the author contends, than creating wholly new ones.

Chemistry Manufacture And Applications Of Natural Rubber

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The growing demand for more sustainable materials has led to increased research on the properties of natural rubber. Chemistry, Manufacture and Applications of Natural Rubber summarizes this research and its significance for the industrial applications of natural rubber. Chapters in part one explore the properties and processing of natural rubber, including the biosynthesis of natural rubber in different rubber-producing species, chemical modification of natural rubber for improved performance, and the effect of strain-induced crystallization on the physical properties of natural rubber. Further chapters highlight hydrophobic and hydrophilic silica-filled cross-linked natural rubber and computer simulation of network formation in natural rubber. Part two focusses on applications of natural rubber, including eco-friendly bio-composites using natural rubber matrices and reinforcements, soft bio-composites from natural rubber and marine products, natural rubber for the tire industry, the application of epoxidized natural rubber in pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs), and the use of natural rubber for vibration isolation and earthquake protection of structures. Finally, chapters in part three consider environmental and safety issues associated with natural rubber, including improving the sustainable development of natural rubber, the recycling of natural and synthetic isoprene rubbers and of sulfur cross-linked natural rubber, and recent research on natural rubber latex allergy. Chemistry, Manufacture and Applications of Natural Rubber is a comprehensive resource for academics, chemists, chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, and other professionals in the rubber industry, as well as those industries, including automotive, civil, and medical engineering, using natural rubber products. - An updated review with systematic and comprehensive coverage of natural rubbers - Covers a broad range of topics, including the chemistry, processing, sustainability, and applications of natural rubbers - Coverage of the best international research, including key experts from Asia, the United States, South America, and Europe
