Pompeii Its Life And Art

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The history of the legendary city, literally unearthed from the dust. After the volcano explosion, a stream of lava devastated the town and buried thousands of locals under the river of melted minerals. Centuries later, their last moment was recovered by filling the gaps in petrified lava. Thus, we see the previous inhabitants of Pompei in the final moments of their lives. This work collected the excavation materials, historical documents, and mentions to compile an objective picture of the ancient city's life and arts.

Women S Lives Women S Voices

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Literary evidence is often silent about the lives of women in antiquity, particularly those from the buried cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Even when women are considered, they are often seen through the lens of their male counterparts. In this collection, Brenda Longfellow and Molly Swetnam-Burland have gathered an outstanding group of scholars to give voice to both the elite and ordinary women living on the Bay of Naples before the eruption of Vesuvius. Using visual, architectural, archaeological, and epigraphic evidence, the authors consider how women in the region interacted with their communities through family relationships, businesses, and religious practices, in ways that could complement or complicate their primary social roles as mothers, daughters, and wives. They explore women-run businesses from weaving and innkeeping to prostitution, consider representations of women in portraits and graffiti, and examine how women expressed their identities in the funerary realm. Providing a new model for studying women in the ancient world, Women’s Lives, Women’s Voices brings to light the day-to-day activities of women of all classes in Pompeii and Herculaneum.

The Private Life Of The Romans

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Private Life of the Romans is a historical work by Harold Whetstone Johnston, a classical historian and Professor of Latin, presenting an account of common and ordinary life of the ancient Romans during the later Republic and earlier Empire. The book provides an opportunity to see the rarely portrayed other side of life of important political figures, since there is often the need of a simple and compact description of domestic life, to give more reality to the shadowy forms of their public careers.

The Porta Stabia Neighborhood At Pompeii Volume I

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is the first of four volumes that present the results from the University of Cincinnati's archaeological excavations of the Porta Stabia neighborhood at Pompeii. These excavations targeted two town blocks on either side of the via Stabiana (insulae VIII.7 and I.1), which comprised modest houses, shops, workshops, food and drink outlets, and hospitality buildings. The present volume describes and documents the phased, structural development of this neighborhood over several centuries. The earliest discernible activity here dates to the 6th century BCE, with the insulae taking their definitive shape only in the 2nd century BCE. It is from this time that production activities dominate the neighborhood, only to be wholly replaced by retail-oriented street-fronts from the early 1st century CE. Underpinning this narrative of urban development is a focus on the social and structural making of the Porta Stabia neighborhood, along with an interest in both the micro- (urban site formation processes) and macro-contextualization of the site (setting the results within a larger historic and urban framework).
