BOOK EXCERPT:
One of the themes of the 20th International Congress of Entomology held in Florence in August 1996 was Ecology and Population Dynamics, with papers presented on single species dynamics, population interactions, and community ecology. This book contains a selection of the papers that were presented, and gives a late-1990s picture of the latest research in this fast developing area.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This classic text, whose First Edition one reviewer referred to as"the ecologists' bible," has been substantially revised andrewritten. Not only have the advances made in the field since theSecond Edition been taken into account, but the scope has beenexplicitly extended to all macroscopic animals, with particularattention being paid to fish as well as other vertebrates. Ecological Methods provides a unique synthesis of themethods and techniques available for the study of populations andecosystems. Techniques used to obtain both absolute and relativepopulation estimates are described, and approaches to the directmeasurement of births, deaths, migration and the construction andinterpretation of life tables are reviewed. The text is extensively illustrated, clearly describing a widerange of equipment and methods of analysis. Comprehensive andup-to-date bibliographies to each chapter fully cover the relevantliterature, and references are given to available computer programsand internet addresses. The book has an active web site providingadditional illustrations, details of equipment and programs, andreferences to work published since the revision was completed. Likethe earlier editions, this book will be an indispensable source ofreference to researchers and students at all levels in the fieldsof ecology, entomology and zoology. Completely revised and rewritten edition of a classic. Scope extended to all macroscopic animals, notably fish andother vertebrates. Active web site displaying additional material. References to computer programmes and internet addressesthroughout the text. Affordable paperback.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book brings together a selection of original studies that address biodiversity and conservation in Europe. The contributions are drawn from a wide range of countries and discuss diverse organism and habitat types. They collectively provide a snap-shot of the sorts of studies and actions being taken in Europe to address issues in biodiversity and conservation – topical examples that make the volume especially valuable for use in conservation biology courses.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Genes in the Environment presents the recent research in the exciting and rapidly developing field of molecular, genetic and modelling techniques. These techniques, central to ecology, provide valuable new tools for addressing complex ecological questions and considerable insights into our understanding of the dynamics of populations and communities. A diver se range of topics is covered, including community dynamics in soils and water, gene flow and spatial dynamics, and the evolution of the pathogenic and symbiotic relationships. Organisms studied range from bacteria, viruses and fungi to insects, plants and fish.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Over the past decades, large amounts of data about carabids have been collected in the Netherlands, initially for the purpose of creating distribution maps for the country. In addition to information from collections and faunistic publications, a significant amount of data came from ecological studies using pitfall traps. Because of the rich tradition of carabidological research in the Netherlands, an exceptionally large database of these pitfall data is available. The database is a mix of approximately 1,500 short-term samples and circa 4,400 so-called 'year-samples', for which pitfalls were functional during the whole activity period of ground beetles in spring and autumn. These year-samples came from 2,850 sites, covering the period of 1953-2018, and represent all habitats on the Dutch landscape. These data offer an unusual view of the presence and activity of this common insect family. The data gathered from pitfall trapping is summarised and provides a fresh integrated perspective about the Dutch ground beetle fauna. The characteristic species composition of 17 habitat groups is described in detail. Over 320 species present in the database have been classified into six main groups, according to their patterns of habitat use. Both the classification of habitats and associated species have been tested and used in various analyses in the book. Two chapters give special attention to changes in the Dutch fauna over the past 66 years by means of extensive trend analysis and relate this understanding to nature conservation. The book provides an extension and update for Turin's (2000) atlas. The Dutch carabid fauna is discussed considering relevant literature but uses predominantly European studies to put the faunal patterns in broader context. This book presents the story of Dutch ground beetles and illustrates the contribution of pitfall trapping to our understanding of the ecology of this fascinating and unusually well-studied group of beetles.

BOOK EXCERPT:
One of the main problems and aims of nature conservation in Europe is to protect semi-open landscapes. The development during the past decades is characterized by an ongoing intensivation of land use on the one hand, and an increasing number of former meadows and pastures lying fallow caused by changing economic conditions on the other hand. In several countries the estabishment of larger "pasture landscapes" with a mixed character of open grassland combined with shrubs and forests has been recognized as one solution to this problem. The book gives an overview of the European projects concerning to this topic - nature conservation policy and strategies, scientific results and practical experiences creating large scale grazing systems.
